How has digital technology impacted the concept of citizenship, how people engage within a political space?

Though the title of the data is accurate, I want to focus on both sides of the isle agreeing social media is harmful for American democracy. With fake news, echo chambers, and toxicity, it is easy to see why both sides think this way. There is little opportunities for respectful discourse and social media is a big contributor to the polarization of modern politics.

This data gives context for what social media is the most popular. YouTube being the most popular makes sense because it has a larger variety of content than any other platform; digital citizenship would look very different here compared to other platforms like Twitter.

It easy for adults to immediately point to social media and identify is as evil and a pure negative in teens' lives. The reality is teens enjoy social media for a variety or reasons and like being able to stay connected with the people they care about. We need to acknowledge this when teaching digital citizenship and build on this rather than cutting it down.

Digital citizenship is relevant to this data because it will help students be more reflective on social media. Some people struggle with looking inward and noticing problems they experience that others are. Digital citizenship skills will also help students support their friends who are having negative experiences online.
