This workshop just proved a point I have understood for a long time and that is the fact that your family and upbringing shapes you into the person you become. My family has played a huge role in the person I am today but most of all my grandma. This workshop proved that my identity is made by culture and what you are so naturally used to.

Dr. Koo’s story was very inspiring for me because she took a chance and chose her own life rather than following family. I currently chose to move 3 hours from my family to focus on my life and better myself so I have a connection with her story although hers was very different. She took a risk just like I have and it is up to ourselves to do the most we can with opportunities and she did, just like I hope to do as well.

This workshop can be connected to content we have learned throughout the semester because it has all been about expressing your feelings and your life experiences. Everything throughout this course has been about expressing what we like the most and what our given “Spark” is. This course is helping us find what we love the most in our lives. Art is about expressing your feelings, and our favorite things shape our feelings in many different ways.

This workshop helped me understand Belonging, Culture, and Identity because it reassured me that art is all about being yourself and expressing your loves. Art serves as a judge free outlet for everyone in the world to show off their favorite things in life, or memories they have had from their past. People make art to show off their loved ones, food, and just life in general. Art has so many different shapes, sizes, and forms but in the end it is about the story behind it and what it means to the artist.

Jana Palmiter 3/16 Session Reflection

1) Through Dr. Koo's belonging workshop I learned how much ones "belonging, culture and identity" can influence them. The factors that play a role in these subjects can be people, places or objects. I myself don't often take time to reflect on the people and things that have shaped who I am today. This workshop gave me a time and space to do so.

2) Dr. Koo's stories detailing her experiences and challenges once moving from Korea to the United States were very inspiring. Some of which she listed included the language barrier and difficultly making connections. The one that stands out to me most was her not owning a car. As someone who works two jobs and is a full time, off campus, student my car is essential to my success.

3) I have found ART 3851 to have a strong focus on the incorporation of technology in art classrooms. I think the online program jamboard is an awesome way to do this. I had never used jamboard before this workshop. Students could use the program to collect and organize inspiration for their projects, easily collaborate on group projects virtually and it is free through creation of a Google account!

4) This workshop helped me define the concepts of "belonging, culture and identity." For starters, they are not synonyms. Someone's culture is not their entire identity, culture impacts ones sense of belonging, etc. All of these factors impact individuals differently and are able to influence one both positively and negatively.

1) What did you learn from this Belonging Workshop?
-This workshop helped me understand that it is okay to accept who you truly are. It is NOT okay for you to put images and thoughts from the opinions of in your head telling you that you don't belong a certain place. Be positive and be yourself. Don't be so concerned about other's opinions. God put you on this Earth for a reason, and it is for sure not to live through negative thoughts. Counter them with positivity!

2) What inspired you the most?
-The fact that Dr. Koo was dealing with the challenges that most people have when they are younger, which is not fitting in. She overcame them by staying focus on what she was doing to succeed. I believe if she cared too much about the opinion of others regarding her life, she would not have hosted that Belonging Workshop on Friday.

3) How can you connect this workshop content to what we have been learning through this art education methods course?
-Based on what Dr. Koo discussed about acceptance, this could apply to some of the lesson plans that we have created. It would give us an insight of what we have to be careful and aware of when we assist the mentally challenged. Students with learning disabilities tend to be bullied because of the thought of not being the same as everyone else. Teachers can explain that "just because you learn differently, doesn't mean you have to amount to everyone's opinion. You are who you are, and no one can tell you otherwise."

4) How did this workshop help you better understand the meanings of “Belonging, Culture, and Identity”?
-This allowed to cope with the idea of Belonging, Culture, and Identity because of how it reminded me that it is okay to have a certain race. That should prevent someone from prospering in the future to achieve their goals. We as humans were made unique in order to learn about each other and respect each other, not to diminish each other's hopes and dreams and feed them negativity.

1.What I learned from the workshop was to credit the people in your life and your past because they inevitable shape who you are in some shape or form. Be positive and love who you are. There is and will only be one of you. No one grows up hoe you do are with the people you do so everyone story is unique.
2.What inspired me the most was Dr.Koo being so opened about her challenges and her past. She has such a positive outlook and that helps a lot of people. Negativity is and always will be around us but having people share positive with others is very inspiring.
3.What I would connect to our lessons is digging deep and showing you through your art. I said it before everyone is unique and has their own story so no one can create art like you. Use your past and ypur feelings and display them through art. It is a great way of expression and opening up.

4.Taking time to write that essay about my family and where I'm from makes me think of how much they impacted me. One of my belongings was a graduation cap from high school. Without growing up where I did with who I did I simply wouldn't be me.

1) I learned from this workshop that it is important to be who you are. Even though it may take a little bit to find your place everyone belongs. I learned that the people you surround yourself with can greatly affect who you are and how you fit in.
2) What inspired me the most was despite how much she struggled and how long it took her to find her place, she still found her sense of belonging and embraces who she is.
3) I can connect to this workshop because growing up I felt like I was under a lot of pressure to be successful and do big things. I knew that's not who I was and I didn't want to do something like be a doctor or lawyer. I had to find my own sense of belonging and find what made me the most happy.
4) It helped me understand that belonging can be different for everyone. Whether they are from another country trying to find belonging in their new home, or just finding their sense of belonging within themselves.

1. In the belonging workshop I learned that we do not often think about our identity and the identity of those from other parts of the world. Traveling and moving opens eyes and causes conscious acknowledgement of differences. I learned that people who move to vastly different parts of the world must adapt much more than I originally thought.

2. What inspired me the most is Ahran Koo’s story where she moved from Korea to America. Two countries that have things that are vastly different like social norms, housing from furniture to kitchen appliances and cutlery. Learning a second language that is primarily used for communication and navigating around is most vital and difficult. Ahran was able to find people who could be her supporting anchors. Her adaptability and perseverance are most inspiring!

3.Acknowledging the struggles and needs of those who come from another part of the world is important, especially in an education setting. Being able to understand the needs of a student is vital to coming up with a solution to help them continue to grow. In Art Education it can better help them express themselves and find their identity, their belonging.

4. Regarding this workshop, I now better understand the various cultural identities and how people from around the world find belonging in when in different countries of the world. I realize that one’s identity may be formed not just from people but by things that they like and how they dress based on their preferences.

1. In this workshop I learned that the people around you and your environment really shape you into the person you are and/or will become.
2. Ahran Koo's story inspired me a lot. I think that I relate to her becoming her own person. I think that in order to become your own person you need to let go of people's expectations of you. That is what I had to learn growing up and I am still working on it.
3. I think that in my art education career acceptance and diversity are what drive art. There is always room for diversity in art.
4. This workshop helped me understand Belonging, Culture, and Identity because I can now understand how other people were shaped into the person that they are. I think that everyone has a story to tell.
