Holi is a hindu festival celebrating the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Also kown as the Festival of Colours, it is a celebration of love, laughter, friendship, hope and joy. It lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of the Purmina (Full Moon day) falling in the Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar month of Phalgun, witch falls somewhere between the end of February and the middle of March. Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with Holika Pahan where people gather, perform religious ritual in front of the bonfire, and pray that their internal evil will be destroyed the way Holika, the sister of the demon kingi Hiranyakashipu, was killed in the fire. The next day is celebrated as Rangwali Holi-a free-for.all festival of colours, where people smear each other with colour. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friends or strangers, rich od poor. Fight with colours occures in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups go from place to place carring drums and musical instruments, sing and dance. People visit friends and family, trow coloured powders on each other, laugh and gossip, then share Holi delicacies, food and drinks. The festival of Holi is celebrated in many parts of the world outside India: Russia, New York, Brazil, Rome(Italy), Malaysia, Germany, etc...
