A life lesson from chapter 12 is that even though times in life can get hard, you have to keep going and push through it. A theme that I learned from Ch.12 is we can use past experiences to help us with the present. My theme is that when you think you are safe sometimes it can go bad quickly. I say this because in the book it says that they were living in the Itang refugee camp for 6 years with no trouble but on a day when Salva was walking back to the camp he was a lot of trucks and he saw soldier come out and start telling them to leave and chasing them to the Gilo river to go back to Sudan while shooting in the air. This shows that during all this they didn't have their guard up because they thought they were safe for 6 years until the bad came. One theme that Salva has to get over is change. Slava has to understand that his parents are truely dead and that he is the only one left in his family, so he has to get over this fact. What mattered was that Salva was on his own. In the text it states, "If someone had told Salva that he would live in the camp for six years, he would never believe it. Six years later: July 1991. 'They are going to close the camp. Everyone will have to leave.' 'That's impossible. Where will we go.' 'That's what they're saying. Not just this camp. All of them.'", and, "They are driving us back to Sudan, Salva thought. They will force us to cross the river. ..." (Park, 2010, pg's. 73 and 75) This shows that even though people had stayed at that camp for six years they still had to leave. They thought everything was fine and let their guards down, but the guards made them leave. The guards are chasing them back to Sudan where the war is and who knows if everyone will live.
