President Biden inauguration/ Angela Gorman's poem

When we watched the President's Inauguration It was very interesting to see and hear the President speak on what he will do to change America in a positive way. I can still remember somewhere along the lines he was going to improve many things for America and how this was a new start. Then when Angela Gorman read her poem it was inspirational and motivating. She used many great verses in her poem to talk about our future and put our differences aside to be able to create this future.
I believe this assignment didn't really help much with learning about Chicano/Latino culture because it doesn't mention much about it.

13th documentary & Black History Month

When learning about the 13th documentary I learned there was discrimination and unfairness in the prison system. However I also learned about Black History Month and was introduced to poems I've never heard about. Many were very interesting and were poems about how unfair life was when slavery still existed. I believe these assignments helped me learn about latino/chicano culture because African Americans are not that different from Latinos/Hispanics/Chicanos. We share the same struggle and this is why we will always support one another as brown with black.

The Devil Highway

I learned a great amount when reading the Devils Highway. I got a closer look on how it really is crossing the border from someones point fo view. There were many struggles and many innocent people who died due to ones selfish greed. Reading the novel also taught me how difficult the whole route is when someone wants to cross the border. Some get killed, left behind, robber of their money, and women often get sexually assaulted. Its just very sad that sometimes your own people can take advantage of you when you are struggling. Overall I believe this assignment taught me a lot about Latino/Chicano culture because I am part of a culture where this is very common till this day and many struggle to come here to the US to find a better future.

Immigration issues

Learning about the immigration issues are nothing new but it was sad to learn about how nothing has changed. There are still many migrant children who are separated from their families and live in horrible conditions. When reading some of the experience migrants had it was very sad because all they wanted was to find somewhere they can be safe and call home. However one of my favorite assignments was writing the letters to migrant children and letting them know someone is out there thinking about them and praying for them to be safe. I believe all of the assignments about immigration issues taught be something about Latino/Chicano culture because it brought up a lot of the issues many migrants go through which are often ignored.

Latin American poetry

Learning about American Poetry was new to me and I learned a lot about Latin poets. I learned about Jose Marti and Pablo Neruda, and how they each had poems of their own struggles. I learned how in these poems it was there way of expressing what they were going though. Many of these poems were hard to understand at first but there was a great significance to every stanza when you pay close attention. Overall I believe this assignment helped me to understand about the Latino/Chicano culture because these poets wrote about their struggles and gave me a different perspective of their struggles.

When writing my own poetry it was very difficult at first but then i got the hang of it. I think the poems we did before helped guide me to where i was going with my poems. I never though i could write my own poems but it was such a great experience to write verses and rhyme words. I wrote poems that related with me and i think my favorite one was, " A beautiful Disaster" because i wrote about my homeland and the struggles many young girls face. Overall I believe this assignment helped me learn about Latino/Chicano culture because were were writing about our own struggles.

Being in this class taught me a lot and it was such a great experience. I learned about different issues and why they were important. Many of the assignments were very interesting and keep me focused in class. I think there should be more assignments that are in modern days and they relate to the issues in the past to make connections. Overall I don't really have any comments of advice for this class because there was such a variety of assignments.
