Der Palast der Republik wurde durch die DDR gebaut und war der teuerste Gebäude der DDR.
Er wurde aber 1990 geschlossen und abgebaut.
Allerdings war er Asbestverseucht.
Heute ist er ein Kulturort und Treffort.

2002 wurde der Abriss des Palastes wegen Asbestverseuchung von dem Bundestag beschlossen. Endlich wurde der Palast von 2006 bis 2008 abgerissen.
