My name is Derrick Gibbs, believe it or not this is my final course before I receive my degree. Yeah! I'm a part-time student at Trent (since 2010) working on my ECON degree. I currently work for the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board 20 years as the Senior Project Technologist (Facilities Department). I have had several positions with the School Board ranging from Custodian to Accounts Payable Clerk to Business Analysis to Financial Analysis to Finance Supervisor and now my current role. Previous to working at KPR I graduated from Sir Sandford Fleming (long before all of you were born) and work as Assistant Manager at Scotiabank. Part of the course discusses changes in your Financial status and everything I have done was to improve my families wellbeing. I have been working toward my BA through part-time studies for 6 years now, and am hoping 2023 is my year to finish. I work in the AIDS sector, managing a program at a non-profit organization. When I was picking my courses for this semester my mother thought it was a good idea for me to take personal finance because I have a bad habit of spending my money. I believe this course will help me learn to budget my own money since I do have future finance goals such as building my own house and business but I also think it will help me in my current job since I work in a grocery store. Personal finance is something that was never taught to us in high school, which is something that should have been taught since it’s a daily life thing that people are going to be doing for the rest of their life’s.

I am Veronica and I am a computer science major. I spend money like I am trying to use receipts as a ladder to the moon. My best money saving technique is freezing my cards in a bowl of water.

I somehow have managed to pay my taxes this and last year. An interesting stat is 40% of Canadians do not pay income taxes (Rechtshaffen, 2019). I miss being a part of this side ಥ_
--Regardless of this, paying taxes has put a considerable dent in my budget. The $114 refund isnt really the incentive I think the CRA thinks it is... I am hoping this course will arm me with the knowledge to get through university AND let me eat one meal a day. If I am really spoiled, maybe I'll be able to afford the chicken that I recently saw priced at $25 a kilo at Loblaws.
