Abrasion

Definition: An abrasion is a superficial wound caused by the skin rubbing against a rough surface.

Initial Care: Clean the wound with soap and water, apply an antibiotic, and cover with a bandage.

Post-Care: watch for infection and change the dressing daily. Get medical attention if the wound shows signs of infection.

Laceration

Definition: A laceration is a deep cut or tear in the skin, caused by sharp objects

Initial Care: Apply pressure to stop bleeding, clean the wound, and cover with a bandage

Post-Care: stitches or staples may be required and monitor for infection

Incision

Initial Care: Keep the area clean and dry to reduce the chance of infection

Puncture

Avulsion

Universal Precaution

Universal precautions are precautions people administering first aid should take to ensure the safety of themself, the victim, and bystanders. This includes wearing gloves, masks, and protective eyewear, and properly disposing of sharps and contaminated materials

Proper glove removal

1st: Pinch the outside of one glove near the wrist.

2nd: Peel the glove away from the hand, turning it inside out.

3rd: Hold the removed glove in the other gloved hand.

4th: Slide fingers under the wrist of the remaining glove and peel it off over the first glove.

5th: Dispose of gloves properly and wash hands thoroughly.

Signs of Infection

Signs of Infection: Redness, swelling, warmth, pus, and pain around the wound. Fever may also occur.
