The modules represent the key aspects of effective teaching that we all move through throughout our day as teachers. I feel confident with the majority of the modules since I'm not new to teaching, but I'm particularly looking forward to the module on Analyzing IEPs. I taught in New York City for 12 years before transitioning to SDP a year ago, and I noticed there's a lot of differences between the two systems with how IEPs work and are completed, so I'm looking forward to having some time to review the way things work in Philadelphia to better support students and the teachers I work with.

I notice that many of the fundamentals of teaching will be covered, which is encouraging. I also think it's extremely important to designate time and space to discussing the challenges of teaching in our district, in particular. I think that this is especially important for teachers who are new to the district, because looking back, I was left to navigate through many challenges on my own at the beginning of my career. I think it's essential to prioritize supporting new teachers with transparency and collaboration so that they feel that they can stay. I have found that the only people who can truly understand the experience of teaching are other people who teach, so that support is of the utmost importance.

They seem interesting: at least to see them articulated in these terms - sometimes education feels so heavily loaded with hot-button vernacular. A strength? Probably the top three: foster a learning alliance, parent relationships and cultural empathy. A growth goal? Def IEP stuff and I'm hoping to learn a lot about just the SDP system - navigating it is super-overwhelming as a new teacher.

I'm excited to collaborate with other middle school teachers around literacy in all of the content areas. Something I want to learn more about is supporting ELs and Special Ed students. I hope to grow via induction and more classroom experience in my ability to frame questions and build more opportunities for student-directed learning. Something I always come back to as I reflect on my work in the classroom is the idea that students need to "Maslow before they can Bloom", I notice that there is a module about resilience but I hope that we can reflect together about how we can support our students in the crazy world that we live in.

I believe that my strength is "Fostering a Learning Alliance." I have always been good at establishing connections with students. Frankly, I sometimes rely on that too much and let curriculum slide. I DEFINITELY need to work on strategies for English learners. I haven't really taught any ELs to this point, but if I had to, I think I'd struggle.
One thing that might help as a module is where to find help with questions during the school year.

I just finished my 6th year of teaching middle school in the School District of Philadelphia, and I had the pleasure of having a resident from Relay with me for the whole year. I realized that my superpower as a middle school teacher is my ability to stay calm and to choose my words wisely, even when things are utterly chaotic. I shared that with him many times toward the end of the year, and knowing that I have the power to be calm and intentional, regardless of what is going on around my students and I, gives me the confidence to know that I can create the kind of learning environment that will be healthy and allow my students to flourish.

Also, I think the system for accessing IEPs here is unnecessarily complicated (compared to other districts).

I hate talking about behavior "management." Just feels like we aren't allowing kids to be kids when we say that. But with that said, there's two things that stand out for me. My school uses restorative practices, and that's really helpful for conflict. I've been trying to use a "push-in support" model when I'm responding to an issue that a teacher calls for assistance with where instead of just pulling the student out of class, I try to join the student in class and give them some more 1:1 support to keep them engaged and/or focused. I think the two best ways of "managing behavior" is having strong relationships with students and having quality instruction that engages students in a way that's accessible for them.

And even this year, we were able to get one of my ELs a Spanish-language copy of the novel that we were reading - my ESOL push-in was able to get her a copy. She was engrossed it was great. -Bill

At my school, ~12% of our students are classified as ELLs. We had a recent Tier 1 MTSS meeting and through the analysis of academic data we noticed that 89% of students receiving ESOL services are currently in the Intensive Intervention category for reading based on STAR assessments. So as a whole, we are facing significant challenges for these students. Some things we've put in place so far are encouraging teachers to think about accessibility by providing lot's of visual resources and language acquisition strategies to help support students with gaining access to the academic language that we're using in our classes.

Anna - I have only had one ESL student so I have little to no experience in this area. This student spoke no English and also did not know how to read and write in his language in order to be able to utilize translation services. He was moved to a school with a full-time ESL program. Google translate would be helpful, especially with common languages.
