The lesson learned from the theme of survival, is to never give up. Regardless of Keesh’s (The Story of Keesh) or Pi’s (The Life of Pi) situation, they both gave it their all and things turned out for the better. In the Story of Keesh, a young man(Keesh) and his mother were treated unfairly in their village, but as a child of a great Hunter Keeshond decided to go on and hunt himself. The text states “There is much meat on the ice- a she - bear and two half - grown cubs.” This indicates that Keesh using headcraft, and only 13 years old succeeded in hunting down meat for the village. In the Life of Pi, Pi is stranded in the middle of the ocean with a vicious tiger on a lifeboat. The text states “I looked at Richard Parker. My panic was gone. My fear was dominated. Survival was at hand. And do it came to be: Plan Number Seven: Keep Him Alive.” This shows that Pi’s last resort was to tame the tiger, he didn’t give up.

The lesson that Is learned from the theme of Survival in unit two Is to never give up. In both Life of Pi and Story of Keesh, no matter how hard the circumstances they kept going. Evidence From the Life of Pi to support the theme is “ You might think I lost all hope at that point. I did. And as a result I perked up and felt much better.” Pi kept pushing even though he was starting to lose hope in him living. Another piece of evidence from the Story Of Keesh to support the claim is “ Because he exercised headcraft and not witchcraft, he rose from the meanest igloo to be head man of his village, and through all the years that he lived, it is related, his tribe was prosperous, and neither widow nor weak one cried aloud in the night, because there was no meat.” At first, Keesh was begging council for more meat, and then all he did was work for his own and never give up and he became a headman Of the village and made sure that nobody had to be scarce of food as he was. That is how the lesson “never give up” is presented and learned through the theme of survival in unit two.

The lesson that is learned from the theme of survival in unit two is that you need to use your intelligence and your determination/Mentality fight for survival. One piece of evidence that supports this is when in the text "The Life Of Pi" Pi states " Could I prise it open with my fingernail? I tried. I couldn't. My teeth? It wasn't worth trying. I looked over the gunnel. The tarpaulin hooks. Short, blunt, solid. I kneeled on the bench and leaned over. Holding the can with both my hands, I sharply brought it up against the hook." This shows that Pi had made use of the things around him and fought for survival using his intelligence. Another piece of evidence that may support the claim is in the text "The Story Of Keesh" where the hunter who followed Keesh states "Right up to the bear Keesh walked. And the bear took after him, and Keesh ran away. But as he ran he dropped a little round ball on the ice. And the bear stopped and smelled of it, then swallowed it up." This shows the tactic that Keesh used to take down the bear and her cubs to survive which also shows a high level of determination and intelligence, which is remarkable since Keesh is very young.

The lesson learned from the theme of survival is that it isn’t easy, and that you should never give up. A character trait that is needed to survive is determination, throughout the excerpts from “The Story of Keesh” and “The Life of Pi,” the main characters possess these traits and use them to survive. In “The Story of Keesh,” the main character, Keesh, uses determination to survive. For example, “The anger boiled a white heat.” And later on, “And there was importance in his step and arrogance in his speech.” These quotes show how Keesh was determined to prove his point to the council, that he could survive on his own if needed. An example of determination from “The Life of Pi” is, “And so I pushed aside all thoughts of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water.” Another example is, “Pity about the fat, but given the exceptional circumstances the vegetarian part of me would simply pinch its nose and bear it.” These two quotes show how Pi was fearless at the thought of surviving, and he would do anything it takes, even if it meant eating meat, despite the fact he was a vegetarian. These short stories show how no matter the circumstances, how simple or difficult, they were willing to do whatever it takes to survive.

The lesson that I learned from survival in unit two is that in order to survive you need to have a determined mind set because having a mind set like this will allow you to do what your mind is set to or you will never survive. In "The life of Pi" his mind set allows him to find what he needs to survive because of his mind set. The "Story of Keesh" also demonstrates this because Keesh's mindset also allows him to survive in these extereme conditions. As the text states " Bok my father was a great hunter. I too his son shall go hunt the meat that I eat". This evidence shows how Keesh's determined mind set will go on to allow him to survive his predicament. "The life of Pi" also states " I pushed aside all the thoughts of Richard Parker and went exploring the boat for water". These two peices of evidence show how their determined mind set allows them to survive.

The lesson learned from the theme of survival in unit two is no matter what keep pushing despite the pill you have to swallow in order to do so. In both the texts The life of Pi and Keesh if they have given up and not keep pushing they wouldn't have survived the way they did and this shows that they both possess Determination. For example, in the The story of Keesh it states, " The anger boiled a white heat. They ordered him to bed, threatened that he should have no meat all , and promised sore beatings for his presumption. Keesh's eyes began to flash, and the blood to pound darkly under his skin. In this midst of the abuse he sprang to his feet ". This shows that despite the doubts he continued to push to survive and sometimes in life people need conflict in order to shape them in a better version of themselves. Also, in The life of Pi it states, "..this sensation that my blood was tuning to a thick syrup that barely flowed. Truly, by comparison , a tiger was nothing. And so I pushed aside all thoughts of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water." This shows how he was determined to get water in order to survive and despite his fear of Richard Parker he kept on pushing.

A Lessos that was learned from unit 2 was that you have to fight in order to survive in any type of situation. This is supported by “The Story of Keesh” and “Life of Pi”, because in “The Story of Keesh” it states, “Keesh showed the blood that ran in his veins and the manhood that stiffened his back....For that I know my father, Bok was a great hunter, I speak these words. It is said that Bok brought home more meat than any of the two best hunters.” This piece of evidence shows that Keesh was fighting for himself, and for his father. This shows that now that his father isn’t with him, he stands up for his name, so he can still be respected. We see that at the end of the day, he survived and was able to prove that he can go through all these troubles to reach his goal. On the other hand, in the “Life is Pi” it states, “It was enough to make me go raving mad. I have never known a worse physical hell than this putrid taste and pasty feeling in the mouth, this unbearable pressure at the back of the throat, this sensation that my blood was turning to a thick syrup that barely flowed. Truly, by comparison, a tiger was nothing. And so I pushed aside all thoughts of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water.” This example shows that he has come to this point where he is DONE, he is done with sitting there doing nothing, starving, and thirsty. He is now going to “fight back”. We can see that Pi yells at Richard Parker saying, “you ugly; foul creature”. This is how we know that he is ready to fight back in order to survive. This is how “The Story of Keesh” and the “Life of Pi” shows that you need to fight in order to survive tough situations.

For example in the "Life of Pi" it states "And so I pushed aside all thoughts of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water." This quote shows Pi having mental strength because Pi fearlessly went out exploring for water and he did this by ignoring Richard Parker so he had to have mental strength in order to ignore a tiger like the way he did.

The lesson that was learned from the theme of survival in unit two was: Control your emotions no matter how you feel. It shows this in both “The Story of Keesh” and the excerpt from “Life of Pi”. For example in “The Story of Keesh” it states “Keesh’s eyes began to flash, and the blood to pound darkly under his skin. In the midst of the abuse he sprang to his feet.” In other words Keesh was really angry and he was so close to snatching. But he controlled his emotions and survived his conflict. In the “Life of Pi” excerpt it also shows how this lesson helped Pi survive in an extreme conflict. In the excerpt Pi states “I surely would have given up and let go of the oar, hoping that I might drown before being eaten.” This clearly shows how he wanted to give up and he was so close to do so but he controlled how he felt and held on and ending up surviving instead of giving up.

A lesson that I learned from the theme of survival in unit two is that you shouldn't let others control your thoughts and self-esteem. In the short story "The Story of Keesh", it states that, "Jeers and scornful laughter followed him out the igloo, but his jaw was set and he went his way... Those who saw him go noted that he carried his bow, with a good supply of bone-barbed arrows, and... his father's big hunting-spear." This quote states that although the councilmen have discouraged and laughed at Keesh, he didn't change his idea of going to hunt in the place of his father. Instead of storming off in tears, Keesh kept his self-esteem high and starting to hunt on his own, accepting the harsh opinions from the council. This made Keesh successful in hunting and became the headman of his village. In the excerpt "The Life of Pi," the text states that, "With a tiger abroad, my life was over. That being settled, why not do something about my parched throat?" This quote states that even though Pi was on a boat with an adult tiger, he didn't let that affect him and he tried to deal with his parched throat. Pi kept his thoughts of surviving and because of that, he was able to survive his extreme environment. He didn't allow the tiger to affect his self-esteem and in the end, he wanted to even tame the tiger. Because of the theme of survival in unit two, I learned that only you have the authority of your mind and you shouldn't allow anything to change your ideas and self-esteem.

The lesson that was learned in the theme of survival in unit two is that you have to be intelligent. For example "The Story of Keesh" it states , " and Keesh ran away. But as he ran he dropped a little round ball on the ice. And the bear stopped and smelled of it, then swallowed it up. And Keesh continued to run away and drop little round balls, and the bear continued to swallow them up." This shows how Keesh was using head craft and poison the bear by giving it what the bear likes and managed to kill the bear and prove to the village that he wasn't using witchcraft. In a different story in " The Life of Pi" it states "According to the instructions, each 500-gram
carton was supposed to last one survivor three days. That meant I had food rations to last me— 31 x 3— 93
days! The instructions also suggested survivors restrict themselves to half a liter of water every twenty-four
hours. I counted the cans of water. There were 124. Each contained half a liter. So I had water rations to last
me 124 days. Never had simple arithmetic brought such a smile to my face. " This illustrates that Pi had know that his food could last long if he only knew how to save it and because he knew he could use that to his survival and advantage

The lesson learned from the theme of survival in unit two is that in order to survive it has to be for something or someone. In the " . In " Life Of Pi" he wanted to survive and also keep Richard Parker alive. According to the text it states" I had to tame him. It was at that moment that I realized this necessity. It was not a question of him or me, but of him and me". This piece of evidence is explaining that Pi realizes how important it is that him and Richard Parker survive which gives him confidence and courage to survive. In the Story Of Keesh" he wanted to fight and survive for his mother survival and his father's honor. According to the text it states" Bok, my father, was a great hunter.

The lesson that is learned from the theme of survival in until two is that survival starts in the mind. In the Story Of Keesh, it states, "Hear me, ye men!...Never shall speak in the council again, never again till the men come to me and say...I, too, his son shall go and hunt the meat that I eat." Keesh has already survived his conflict in his mind. He is going to hunt for him and his mother. Keesh already thinking about going hunting will help him get a good mind set so he is capable of surviving while hunting. In The Life Of Pi, it states, "And so I pushed aside all thought of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water." Even though Richard Parker being on the boat with him is a huge obstacle he has to pass, Pi is forgetting about the tiger and is focusing more on the resources he needs to have in order to survive. This means that Pi already has a strong mindset that will help him find the resources he needs to have and help him survive on the bout with Richard Parker.

The lesson that is learned from the theme of survival in unit two is that patience will help you reach your goal. The excerpt, "The Life of Pi", was used to portray the theme of survival by showing the struggle that Pi goes to and how he is able to survive the harsh conditions. The excerpt states "I had all the time n the world." This quote shows patience because Pi believes that he can take his time to think of solutions which later on benefited him in several ways. Another excerpt that was used to show the theme of survival was "The Story of Keesh". "The Story of Keesh" is about a boy that took action to prove the people of his village that they will later on see that he had potential and that he will complete the task he gave himself, which is to bring back as much meat as his father and it will be distributed fairly. The excerpt states, "He waited calmly till the uproar died down." This quote demonstrates patience because Keesh did not add to the commotion he waited till the people quite down to continue his statement. This had also benefit Keesh because later on in the text he was able to state his point with everyone listening to him, everyone was able to hear the way he feels. This two documents shows that patience is an advantage and will help you survive in different ways.

The lesson that is learned from the theme of survival in unit two is never give up and believe that you can conquer anything. In both the short story's "The Life of Pi" and "The Story of Keesh" it shows the problems they went through and how they survived them by not letting their hope in surviving disappear. For example in the story "The Life of Pi" it states "Could i prise it open with my fingernails? I tried. I couldn't. My teeth? It wasn't working... I looked over the gunnel. The turpulin hooks. Short, blunt, solid. I kneeled on the bench and leaned over... I made a larger hole. I sat back on the gunnel. I held the can up to my face." In the part of the story, as Pi was dying of thirst, he found a can with water but didn't have a can opener so instead of giving up he looked around for any resources that could can help him pry open the can and get that water into his mouth. Another example is in "The Story Of Keesh" it states "Take this now, ye men, for my last word. Bok, my father, was a grat hunter. I, too, his son, shall go and hunt meat that I eat. And be it known, now, that the division of that which I kill shall be fair." In this time of the story Keesh is standing up to the council that was doubting him, saying that he is not able to hunt food like his father and showing that he is able to do anything just like his father. Therefore the lesson learned from the theme of survival in unit to is never give up and always believe that you can over come anything.

In the Life of Pi, Pi was stranded on a boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean along with a tiger and a hyena, with a hyena that is a very viscous animal that could possibly kill him he tricks himself to think that the hyena won't to nothing to him instead of him being scared leading him to be a target for the hyena to kill him. For instance " I was no longer afraid of it. It wasn't ten feet away, yet my heart didn't skip a beat. To be afraid of this ridiculous dog when there was a tiger about was like being afraid of splinters when trees are falling". This quote shows

Both "Story Of Keesh" and "Life OF PI" it shows the problem and challenge the main character went through and how they use their mind and intelligent to help them survive. In the "Story OF Kessh" Keesh village will denied Keesh wish and didn't listen to Keesh request. Keesh ended up going by himself and he got the meat all by himself. For example in the text it states that Keesh ran away, but as he ran he dropped a little round ball on the ice, and the bear stopped and smelled it, then swallowed it up.

A lesson that I've learned through the theme of survival in unit two based on "The Life Of Pi" and "The Story Of Keesh" would be to always stay determined no matter what. For example, in the Life Of Pi it states, "There was no question. Thirst pushed me on" This textual evidence demonstrates how his determination at the time, stemmed from his die of thirst. Another example is, "But steadily and with seriousness, Keesh went on. "For that I know my father, Bok, was a
great hunter, I speak these words. It is said that Bok brought home more meat than any of
the two best hunters, that with his own hands he attended to the division of it, that with his
own eyes he saw to it that the least old woman and the last old man received fair share."" This illustrates how Keesh was extremely determined to convince the council to let him hunt and to continuously fought for the people in his village.

The lesson from he theme of survival in unite two is that, you should never give up despite the circumstances. To prove this point, in "The Story of Keesh", when Keesh went to discuss about the lack of meat for the village and, they denied his wish, he went and got the meat by himself. As the text states, "His very next trip he killed a young bear, nearly fully-grown, and on the trip following, a large male bear and his mate." This shows how despite the council denying his wish, he took his wish and made it come true without help. In "The Life of Pi", Pi was "alone and orphaned, in the middle of Pacific", and despite this, he finds his pain as a will to live. As the text states, "I had not had a drop to drink or a bite to eat or a minute of sleep in three days. Finding this obvious explanation for my weakness brought me strength." This is how not giving up despite the circumstances , is learned from unit two

What i learned from the theme of survival in unit two is that you need to work to get what you want. In the story of keesh in the last paragraph it states ¨Because he exercised headcraft and not witchcraft he rose from the meanest igloo to be head man of his village and through all the years that he lived it is related his tribe was prosperous and neither widow nor weak one cried aloud in the night because there was no meat. The word headcraft meaning he used the knowledge he had prior. He earned being the being head of the village. In the life of pi it states ¨ My eyes immediately fell upon what I was looking for. Whether in a bottle, a tin can or a carton, water is
unmistakably packaged. On this lifeboat, the wine of life was served in pale golden cans that fit nicely in the hand. Drinking Water said the vintage label in black letters. HP Foods Ltd. were the vintners. 500 ml were the contents. There were stacks of these cans, too many to count at a glance. With a shaking hand I reached down and picked one up. It was cool to the touch and heavy. I shook it. The
bubble of air inside made a dull glub glub glub sound. I was about to be delivered from my hellish thirst. My
pulse raced at the thought. I only had to open the can.
I paused. How would I do that?
I had a can— surely I had a can opener? I looked in the locker. There was a great quantity of things. I
rummaged about. I was losing patience. Aching expectation had run its fruitful course. I had to drink now or I would die. I could not find the desired instrument. But there was no time for useless distress. Action was needed. Could I pry it open with my fingernails? I tried. I couldn’t. My teeth? It wasn’t worth trying. I looked over the gunnel. The tarpaulin hooks. Short, blunt, solid. I kneeled on the bench and leaned over. Holding the can with both my hands, I sharply brought it up against a hook. A good dint. I did it again. Another dint next to the first. By dint of dinting, I managed the trick. A pearl of water appeared. I licked it off. I turned the
can and banged the opposite side of the top against the hook to make another hole. I worked like a fiend. I
made a larger hole. I sat back on the gunnel. I held the can up to my face. I opened my mouth. I tilted the
can. My feelings can perhaps be imagined, but they can hardly be described. To the gurgling beat of my greedy throat, pure, delicious, beautiful, crystalline water flowed into my system. Liquid life, it was. I drained that golden cup to the very last drop, sucking at the hole to catch any remaining moisture.¨

This lesson is showed throughout "The Story Of Keesh" because Keesh sees that he is being seen as useless and he then comes back and shows that he fought to survive and didn't give up hope on surviving. For example in the text it states," Keesh strode into the village. But he had not come shamefacedly. Across his shoulders he bore the burden of fresh-killed meat." This quote shows how Keesh had survived out in the wilderness and had hope he would come back with bear meat. In "The Life Of Pi" Pi had not lost hope he would survive even though he was surrounded by sharks and a tiger. For example in "The Life Of Pi" I pushed aside all thoughts of Richard Parker and fearlessly went exploring for fresh water." This quote shows how Pi had not lost hope to find water and survive and had also had to fight hard to get rid of the fear he gets from Richard Parker to survive.

The lesson that I have learned from theme of survival in unit two is that you should keep trying to achieve your goals despite how difficult it can be. This lesson is shown through "The Story of Keesh", because in the story, Keesh sees injustice in his village so he stands up for them despite the obstacles in his way. For instance, in the story it states "It was at the council, one night, in the big igloo of Klosh-Kwan, the chief, that Keesh showed the blood that ran in his veins and the manhood that stiffened his back. With the dignity of an elder, he rose to his feet, waited for silence amid the babble of voices". This quote shows that Keesh is a brave person, and when he saw something wrong he immediately went the the highest authority, which is the council. They did not take Keesh seriously and scolded him as if he was some useless child. This event taking place did not discourage Keesh, instead it filled him with the will to prove the council wrong. In addition, Later in the story Keesh goes to hunt down food on his own. There were many cautions with that. Keesh is a young thirteen year old boy, going out o hunt giant polar bears, which are dangerous animals, in fact, the specific animal that killed his own father Bok. This was a great challenge yet Keesh still managed to get through it and brought home food for the people

The lesson that I learned from the theme of survival in unit two, is that no matter what you need to keep pushing and never give up. Try to survive in extreme circumstances. In the text “The story of Keesh“ it states “Because he exercised headcraft and not witchcraft, he rose from the meanest igloo to be head man of his village...”. This shows that instead of giving up, he decided to save the whole village. He could just live in that poorest igloo for the rest of his life, but he chose to become the head of the village. Keesh was fighting to survive. On the other hand in the “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel it states “I had to drink now - or I would die... I tried. I couldn’t... I opened it the way I had the first and its contents vanished just as quickly.” This shows that him needing water pushed him to survive. This is what I learned from the theme of survival in unit two.
