Mindfulness ☁️

For our ‘Writing for Change’ project this week we have focused on mindfulness and how we can use this as a calming strategy in and out of our school. The children started the week by trialing out some mindful techniques like deep breathing, closing their eyes and naming 5 things they can see and hear and 5 finger counting. The second session we decided to write instructions to KS1 on how to use these strategies. The third session consisted of persuasive writing where the children were aiming to convince other teachers and children to try their favourite mindful moments. I have attached some pictures of some of the children making their own mindful moment flash cards, toolkits and bookmarks!

Update on mindfulness!

Some of the children’s finished projects on how to be more mindful in and outside of school are now on display in Jay Class.

Emoji books were a popular choice as they work hand in hand with our Zones of Regulation. The children can use an emoji to help communicate how they are feeling. We also had some bookmarks created by the children to act as a constant reminder while they are quiet reading. Mindful flash cards are hole punched to be attached to teachers lanyards (idea from the children to involve the adults.)

Today, Harry Woodgate, author of Cinnamon Crumb, has visited to talk about his new children’s book that we will be reading in Jay. The children enjoyed the special assembly this afternoon and had questions ready for him in the Q&A session 📚

Homework checks 😊

Some of the children wanted a reminder on when homework is due in Jay Class and so I thought it would be beneficial to pop on the padlet too.

Monday - reading check in. The school policy is for each child to read 5 times a week - 10 minutes per session.

Monday - Mathshed. The children have Mathshed logins stuck on the front cover of their homework diaries along with TTRockstars (optional). Each Monday I will assign the children 10 maths questions that they would have previously learnt in lesson the week prior. I would just like to see how well the maths stuck in their minds and who may require more help on a particular learning objective. The questions on Mathshed help me do this!

Thursday - spellings. Starting with List 1, every Thursday I will give the children sentences including the 5 spelling words they have on their list. I will pop a smiley face stamp if they managed to get all 5 spellings correct and can move on to the next list.
