The people who advocate for unwinding believe that the unwinds are not murdered because they are alive and living in an "undivided state". This is false. The unwinds are murdered. They are not their full selves, so, therefore, the person they once were ceases to exist. Because they have been stripped of all of their organs and body parts, unwinds are no longer alive.

Most of the time, the parents feel terrible about signing the papers to have the child unwound. They regret what they have done to their own children. If unwinding truly was a good thing and not murder, then the parents would not feel guilty afterwards.
When Lev turns Connor and Risa into the juvey-cops he thinks to himself, "Doing the right thing shouldn't make you ashamed". Although this quote does not apply to unwinding, the message still applies. If unwinding were a good thing, then parents would not feel bad about unwinding their children.

This story told in the novel is the perfect example of parents regretting having their children unwound. If Humphrey's parents weren't actually having him murdered, they would not have felt so guilty of what they did and gone mentally insane. Although the reader finds out this story is not completely factual, the central message stays the same. Humphrey or Harlan's parents immediately guilty and regretful of having Harlan unwound. They would not have felt so guilty if what they had done to their son was not murder.

One's Soul

A person's soul is what makes him or her alive. When someone dies, their soul moves on. When a child is unwound, his or her body is taken apart, and therefore, his or her soul is no longer apart of his or her body. This proves that unwinding is murder because a child's body is separated from his or her soul. This argument can also be supported by Connor's thoughts about unwinding, "Connor tries to imagine himself stretched so thin and so wide that he can reach around the world. He imagines his spirit strung between the thousand recipients of his hands, his eyes, the fragments of his brain—none of it under his control anymore, all absorbed by the bodies and wills of others. Could consciousness exist like that?". Connor's thoughts reveal that if he was unwound, his body parts would no longer belong to him but to strangers. His soul would be stretched around the world, and he would have no control over his organs and body parts, which kept him alive and whole.

By trying to justify what they are doing, they are revealing that they know what they are doing is wrong. They are making excuses to make themselves feel better for murdering innocent children.
