Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern is the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand that serves the country since 26th October 2017. She is being called as political hero because she has been in politic for 20 years without any issues that could tarnish her image. From her speech, she portrays justice for everyone without being prejudice about their religions or races. For example, when Donald Trump asked her what U.S could offer to help, she said "sympathy and love for muslim communities.”

2. How did he/she persuade?
Based on Jacinda Ardern's speech about the Christchurch tragedy, she used pathos in her speech where she expressed her empathy towards the incident. She began her speech with some rethoric questions such as "what words adequately express the pain and suffering of 50 men, women and children lost and so many injured?" and "what words express the grief of a city that has already known so much pain?" Those questions were being asked because she wanted to show the unbearable sadness that the family and the New Zealand community feel. In her speech, she also mentioned "racism exists but they are not welcomed here" was because she wants the community to be a better nation where the should end the violence and extremism immediately. To conclude, she used a lot of emotional words to express her grief towards the innocent victims.

3. Was he/she successful? List linguistic devices. 
The speech given by Jacinda Ardern was successful. There are few linguistic devices used in the speech. One of the linguistic devices is assonance. In the speech, she used the national anthem that focused on the use of assonance. Another linguistic device used in the speech is hyperbole. Jacinda Ardern pressed on “But even the ugliest of viruses can exist in places they are not welcome”. The next linguistic device is repetition. Ardern repeated “As-salaam Alaikum. Peace be upon you” at the early of her speech. Then, the use of metaphor. Jacinda Arder mentioned in her speech, “The tides of rememberance flow over”. Finally, the use of anaphor. The repetition of “Simple words” at the beginning of the Jacinda’s speech as she described about the word Assalamualaikum.

1. ETHOS

Nelson Mandela was a former president of South Africa and famously known as person who fight discrimination on the skin colour (apartheid). He was anticipated as from his prison cell, he strategically planned and assessed his moves and anticipated reaction. Next, he says the setting up of Umkhonto We Sizwe, the armedwing of the African People’s Congress, “was a purely defensive action against the violence ofapartheid”. “The factors which necessitated the armed struggle” he says, “still exist today” (48-49). Nelson Mandela adds another item to his division when he pledges his allegiance to the African National Congress and insists that hierarchy in party politics should not be undermined.

2. HOW DID HE PERSUADE?

LOGOS - the appeal to logic, means to convince an audience by using of logic or reason. 

In the speech, Nelson Mandela persuaded the audience by using Logos. 

Here are the Logos in his speech: 
"Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination."


3. AS HE SUCCESFUL IN GIVING SPEECH? GIVE EXAMPLES OF LITERARY DEVICES

Yes, he successfully deliver his speech. The literary devices are as follows:

1) Ethos - Credibility
 
She establishes ethos by introducing herself as a member of the environmental children organisation (ECO) which highlighted her vituous character.  Next, she is courageous to talk on behalf of children all over the world which able to draw attention from everybody. Her goodwill  gesture herself to even explained the structure and functionality of the organisation while mentioning others member of the groups. Lastly, she shows perceived intelligence when she demonstrate the purpose of the organisation is to fight human treats and environmental issue for future generation.


2) How did she persuade?

Severn Suzuki persuaded her audiences mostly using Pathos. She described how her generation were losing their future because of what the previous generation did. She stressed on how she speak on behalf of starving children, dying animals, and how she was afraid to go outside, to breath because of the environmental pollution. She raised a question whether her childrens' generation can enjoy seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterflies. She tried to arouse the emotion of the audiences by attacking the fact that the adults cannot fix our environment, but at least do stop breaking it.
Suzuki also used the element of Logos, by stating a few facts such as the extinction of animals and plants and the suffers of people around the world. However, there was not strong evidences to support her claim as she did not even mention about any statistic or even a name of extinct animal and plants. 


3. Was he/she successful? Give examples and linguistic devices.

Yes. Severn Suzuki's speech was successful because she managed to persuade the audience by using 4 linguistic devices.
1. Repetition (repetition of phrases) 
Example: "I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet, because they have nowhere left to go".
2. Anecdote (interesting story)
Example: "At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us how to behave in the world. You teach us to not to fight with others, to work things out, respect others and to clean our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share not to be greedy. Then, why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?"
3. Analogy (comparison)
Example: " I could be a child starving in Somalia, or a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India."
4. Personafication (the representation of an abstract quality in human form)
Example: "You don't know how to bring the salmon back up a dead stream."

3.1. She is very successful especially in her job which is As former prime minister of British and first women in the field. She introduced Right scheme . She introduced the scheme in order for some of the poorest and previously disenfranchised people in society a way to buy their own homes. Next, Supply Side Reforms and Entrepreneurship . When she was a ruler, Thatcher’s government eventually smashed the grip the public sector and government held over the country . From the action , she indirectly created a far better environment for entrepreneurial people to thrive. Not only that, she defeat of trade union. When she rule the country at that era, she targeted to be the organised labour movements which had wrecked the economy and made the country ungovernable, in particular the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), up to 1m strong, led by Arthur Scargill.

Mahatma Gandhi or his full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, an anti-colonial nationalist and also was a political ethicist. He led a successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He was known as the father of India. He was the Mahatma (Great Soul). Mahatma Gandhi is internationally esteemed for his doctorine of non violent protest to achieve political and social progress. He was leading the Indian national congress in 1921 and recognizing the parties constitution around the principle of 'swaraj' (complete political independence from British). He famously led a 250 miles march to the sea to collect his own salt when British introduced a tax on salt in 1930. In his Quit India Movement speech,

2. Pathos
Gandhi utilizes pathos to persuade readers to encompass amity. Towards the beginning of his speech he uses imagery during In the present crisis, “when the earth is scorched by the flames of Himsa and crying out for deliverance,” he proclaimed. His choice of cutting words such as scorched, flames, and deliverance, all words that carry a negative connotation and will elicit negative feelings towards the audience. However, Gandhi sticks to a mellow, middle diction almost throughout his speech. It is important that his diction and tone be calm in order for him to accentuate peace,. In his words, “I want you to know and feel that there is nothing but purest Ahimsa in all that I am saying and doing today,” in other words he must lead by example. His emphasizes on ‘Ahimsa’ (compassion) many times throughout his speech to influence the audience of his pure intention in delivering the speech.

3. Logos
Gandhi also used logos in his speech. He uses correction of erroneous views. He substantiates his allegation by revealing the flaw of a previous method. For example, he makes an allusion to Carlyle’s French Resolution and Russian revolution stating, “But it is my conviction that in as much as these struggles were fought with the weapon of violence they failed to realize the democratic ideal”. Here he concludes that violence eliminates the potential for a real democratic state in which all are equal. He relates this statement to the situation of Muslims and Hindus in India. Gandhi also identifies a common mistake in reasoning that Indian make, which is the hasty generalization of the British. The fallacy that the British people and British imperialism are one, results in unwanted hatred towards British people. He disclosed, “The people make no distinction between British imperialism and the British people...We must get rid of that feeling”. He reminds the people that the confinement of India is not due to British people but British colonialism. Therefore, the utilization of logos in his Quit India speech works to promote his main idea that nonviolence is essentially an effective weapon on its own.

4. Was he successful?
This speech is considered as a successful speech because it has encouraged his audience to support and encourage the “Quit India Movement.” He convinced his audience through the use of religious connotations. For instance, at the beginning of his speech he makes a reference to god. Gandhi states, “God has vouchsafed to me a priceless gift in the weapon of Ahimsa…God will not forgive me and I shall be judged unworthy of the great gift”
Towards the beginning of his speech he uses imagery, he depicts the earth in turmoil, ravaged by violence, pleading out for help. “In the present crisis, when the earth is scorched by the flames of Himsa and crying out for deliverance,” he proclaimed.
Next, he also used allusions. Allusions are when the speaker makes an indirect reference to another person or event. They are commonly used in this speech. The first allusion encountered in the speech refers to the year 1920, when Gandhi became the leader of the Indian National Congress. “There are people who ask me whether I am the same man that I was in 1920, or whether there has been any change in me”. Through this allusion, Gandhi refers to his opposition, who question his policy of a non-violent resistance to free India. Gandhi replies “Let me, however, hasten to assure that I am the same Gandhi as I was in 1920”. He wishes to disperse any doubt in his abilities or conviction.
