Use and Purpose of Bathing and Grooming Techniques

The use and purpose of bathing and grooming an animal is to improve the animal's quality of life, if the animal had long matted fur that was covered in faeces and dirt, it would make the animals daily activities difficult to complete. By grooming and bathing the animal weekly/ monthly, the animal will have no restraints for them to move around and see. In order to groom and bathe the animal you will need to restrain them first which can be stressful for them but when the grooming becomes frequent they will begin to become used to it, and sometimes may even want to be groomed without needing to be. When the animal is restrained they can then begin to get treated by either cutting their nails, brushing their fur, or washing them. Since some animals can not groom themselves properly, it is important to complete these tasks whenever needed as overgrown nails can affect the animal's ability to walk and may even become infected, the animal's dirty matted fur may make it difficult for the animal to move or see, and when the animal is dirty they could be carrying bacteria that could be harmful or get into their wounds. It is very important for an animal to be groomed, as this will improve their quality of life and let them live as long as they can.

Grooming and Safety.

When we groom an animal we make sure that our hair is tied back and we have medical gloves on as well as a lab coat, this is our personal protection equipment which ensures both our safety and the animal, by having our hair back this keeps it from getting caught in the animal or their claws, by having on our gloves this stops the risk of transferring germs to the animal and keeps them safe and by having a lab coat on this keeps the animal safe from getting caught in clothing and also protects us. When we groom the animal we place them on a table on a mat in order for us to be able to properly reach the animal and for them to be protected from any infections that they may get from the table. We then restrain the animal by placing our middle and index finger on either side of the animal's collar bone, which will keep them still and stop them from being able to move or bite. When brushing an animal's fur we keep one hand down on the animal and use the other to brush through the animal's fur, when there are knots we use a special brush which has a sharp metal end that can be used to separate the hairs, which relieves the pain that the animal may go through by brushing through the knot, we will then brush through the animals fur until the hair is detangled. When cutting an animal's nails it is important to make sure to not go too far when cutting, by stopping at the flesh-toned part of the nail this will then stop you from cutting the animal's part of the nail where there are nerves and will hurt when being cut and may also bleed. By holding the animal up we are able to get a proper hold of the animals nail and can cut it without harming the animal, it is important to cut an animal's nail every month or even sooner as overgrown nails can make it difficult for the animal to move and can also become infected.

We could improve our grooming and safety by having a possible border around the table, this can then prevent the animals from being able to fall, as the animals tend to try and walk away or back up this then is a risk for the animal as they could fall and this will risk the animals safety and well-being. Also, goggles could be worn for when cutting the animal's nails as the nails could go into the animals eye or the person cutting the nails and by having goggles on and someone covering the animals eyes this will prevent them from being injured.
