I have always considered myself to be pretty interested in looking at art, and since a young age, I always found Chinese and other Asian art to be the coolest and most interesting style to look at. My favorite section to read about in this chapter was about Chinese jade carving. I had no idea that jade carving had been around for so long, and that it was used for so many things. This chapter reminded me of when I went to the Philadelphia museum of art. The Chinese art there was so amazing to look at and read about, and most of my favorite pieces were actually jade carvings.

I know in China, Arts and Crafts are very popular. In each province and city, there are specific crafts that people do that are unique to them. Obviously, Art is a huge part of Chinese culture, but I was wondering- how has the style evolved? I know that throughout the different dynasties new art forms were introduced- but how were they different from each other? And now, do Chinese Artists do modern art? I know in America it is very popular, but I was curious if this type of art is common among young artists, or if it is more popular to replicate and use old techniques.

Tang tricolor pottery sounds as if they would be beautiful for displays so it it very surprising that they are used as funerary objects. I always knew porcelain as ‘fine China” so it is interesting to see the history behind it. I was wondering if cloisonne is just a type of pattern? I have actually made a Chinese fan and kite before. They are both such fun crafts to complete although kites can become more complex if you want them to be. I had no idea embroidery was a traditional Chinese handicraft! Embroidery of course also uses silk which is important to Chinese culture. Jade carving sounds like a beautiful and expensive hobby. I would love to see them in my lifetime.

It seems like Chinese people really value and put into use intricate and complex designs. All of the art forms describe in this chapter require a lot of special techniques. I would say Chinese arts are more unique, in a sense that each piece is specially hand crafted. I was amazed it is not too industrialized like modern arts are. Speaking of jade, I see a lot of people still wear jade necklaces or bracelets. Do they have a special meaning or it is a part of tradition?

I admire China's craftsmanship and skill to create such delicate and defined inventions like cloisonne and paper lanterns. I have not heard about batik before. It is a unique approach to dying fabric. After reading this, I realized the unique treasures that each province has made. Is there a competition or bazaar that is held to connect all these provinces and share their inventions?

Whenever I go to museums with an Asian wing or Chinese art, I would often see Chinese pottery, porcelain, cloisonne, embroidery, silk, and Jade. Since the Chinese protected their arts and crafts a long time ago, they have now become very precious artifacts.
I did not know what Cloisonne was so, I searched up an image of it. It is so pretty and elegant. Like with a lot of the other artifacts, I feel like only the rich could own it. However, I was wondering did the lower class own any or had a different style of craft and art?
I think that the weirdest fact that I learn from this reading was about the lanterns that was made out of sesames and is edible. I find that it is so interesting because I feel like it would be really hard to put fire in it. From all the crafts, I think that I am would most like to learn how to embroidery. I just think it is so beautiful and meaningful. Also, I see it in Chinese dramas a lot.

I always thought that the kite was invented by the Korean because of the Korean folktale stories but I looked up on the internet that it was actually invented by the Chinese in 5th century BC by Mozi and Lu Ban. I also love the how the style of the Chinese vase it almost looks so much similar to the old Korean style. But the most interesting thing was the how the silk was made. With most of the Chinese crafts reflecting the time period in which they were made; from the society in which they resided to the life they may have been experiencing at the time. The most well known Chinese craft to westerners (and myself) would have to be porcelain due to the fact that in the past the manufacturing of this is linked directly to China. Westernly, we are convinced that these are just daily necessities of eating and do not take in consideration the art and time put into these delicate works of art.
