The Speaker

The speaker in this piece seems to be either a merchant or a traveler, probably educated more from the world than from schooling. Time is a factor in this piece, and the speaker seems to want to soak in every moment of this rest he takes to watch the snow. Even his horse is anxious to leave and continue on to their destination, but the speaker almost seems to relish the pause. It seems as if he is very weary from his travels.

Robert Frost has written many wonderful poems and pieces that use nature to draw metaphor on human issues, but this piece is more straight forward to me. The speaker is weary and cold, but still appreciative of something as simple as undisturbed snow and relative quiet. We are made aware of the solitude, and the speaker seems to appreciate this as well. For a weary person on a deadline, small pleasures can bring enormous comfort. Even something as small as falling snowflakes.
