-Leo Kanner: was a child psychiatrist at John Hopkins Hospital; published a paper in 1943 and speculated that autism is very rare; by the 1950s, he was the leading authority on the subject; his criteria for diagnosing autism was very selective (ex: not diagnosing children who had seizures); said that autism was caused by cold, unaffectionate parents
-Lorna Wing: was a cognitive psychologist in London who did not agree with Kanner's findings (she had a daughter with autism however her and her husband were warm and affectionate). She looked in the community for children with autism so she could disprove his theories
-Hans Aspergers: Wrote a paper that went against what Kanner said. He said that autism is a disability, not something that is the parents fault.

Aspergers is now what we call Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Level 1. It was in the DSM up until it was taken out for the 5th edition. It is still used legitimately by clinicians, parents, teachers, therapists, etc in conversation and can be especially helpful when trying to find information or understand the diagnosis (since it was used for so many years)

These are 3 theories help to explain some characteristics of ASD
-Impaired Theory of Mind:
Theory of mind refers to the ability to understand other's thoughts, beliefs, desires and intentions to understand their behaviors and be able to predict what they will do next. So therefore, impaired theory of mind aka: mind blindness is when someone has difficulty "putting themselves in someone else's shoes"
-Weak Central Coherence:
Children with autism may be really good at seeing the details but have a hard time seeing the overall "bigger picture"
-Impaired Executive Function:
Executive function refers to organizational and planning abilities, working memory, impulse control, time management and prioritizing, and using new strategies
