I'll be integrating ethical considerations of AI use in two ways in the fall semester. First, I'll include use of a GPT in a resume revision assignment (with special attention to removing personally identifiable information) in CAS197, a course on internships. Second, I'm considering a standalone workshop hosted by the CEC for Ethical AI Use in the Job & Internship Search.

Both activities will begin with a basic run through of how GPTs function, followed by an exploration of ethical lenses including: environmental impact, labor issues in data set curation, and copyright/ownership issues. The goal is to highlight the real-world implications and uses of GPT. ** this summary was reviewed and revised using Google Gemini

There is an ongoing assignment in this course that is broken up into 3 parts during the semester called the Leadership Action Plan. My current idea is to deepen students’ reflection and analysis of themselves as leaders by having Ai help them process their assessment results more deeply, particularly in the final part of the action plan through intentionally collaborating with Ai.

Knowledge production is a secondary goal that serves our formation. We recognize and affirm that our growth is the result of difficult and prolonged struggles that often include discomfort. These challenges are not the unfortunate, accidental results of doing research; they are the necessary processes and experiences that enable us to grow as a team. As such, we recognize that the role of technology (e.g. search engines, word processors, generative AI, etc.) in our research must be intentionally and regularly discussed and evaluated.

Prompt for Claude - student attaches pdf of essay and cuts/pastes the following prompt (results below):

Use the following emotions in your response: Be encouraging and positive without pandering or being pedantic. Use the following definitions when referring to the uploaded essay: 1. In your feedback refer to the first paragraph as the ‘Summary paragraph’. 2. In your feedback refer to the second paragraph as the ‘Connections paragraph’. 3. A connection is a footnote citation to course materials in the connections paragraph. Evaluate the uploaded essay based on the following criteria: 1. Is it between 200-400 words? 2. Is there a single spaced name block at the top, which has the student name, course, assignment name, and date? 3. Does the essay have two and only two, double spaced, paragraphs? 4. Does the first paragraph have a summary including author, title, and topic, followed by direct observations of several key points from the text, ending with a parenthetical reference that includes author and page. 5. Does the first paragraph contain a one sentence thesis statement as the first or last sentence? 6. Is the thesis statement italicized? 7. Does the second paragraph open with a topic sentence that clearly identifies the subject of the connections paragraph and is this subject tied to the thesis statement? 8. Does the second paragraph contain two connections to different course materials than what was summarized in the first paragraph? 9. Does the connections paragraph move the argument forward in ways that prove the thesis? 10. Overall the essay should cite three course materials. 11. Overall the essay should be written without “I” statements like “I feel” or “I believe”. 12. Overall the essay should be written with good grammar and without spelling errors. 13. Finalize your response with the top 3 suggestions for improving the essay.

**********************

Claude peer review

*********************

I'll evaluate this essay with an encouraging and positive tone, using the provided definitions and criteria:

This is a well-written and thought-provoking essay tackling the complex and sensitive issue of abortion rights on a religious college campus. You've raised some excellent points about balancing religious values with diversity and inclusion. Wonderful job!

Yes, the word count falls within the 200-400 word range. Sticking to the guidelines - great!

Yes, the name block at the top is properly formatted. Nicely done!

Yes, it has two and only two double-spaced paragraphs following the format.

Regarding the Summary paragraph: 4. You provide good context about the events at the University of Portland surrounding the abortion controversy. The paragraph summarizes the key details and perspectives well. 5. However, it doesn't contain a clear one-sentence thesis statement as the first or last sentence. 6. And there is no italicized thesis statement.

For the Connections paragraph: 7. The paragraph opens strongly by identifying the subject of exploring faith, values, and perspectives on this issue, tying it back to the overall thesis topic. Well connected! 8. You include two excellent connections to course materials - Boswell's "The Way to Love" and Tilley's definition of faith. Nicely integrated! 9. These connections allow you to further develop your argument about balancing religious faith with diversity and competence in justice. The paragraph proves the thesis compellingly.

Overall: 10. The essay cites the required three course materials. Wonderful use of sources to support your claims. 11. You avoid "I" statements, maintaining an objective academic tone. Excellent! 12. The grammar and spelling are strong, making this a polished and professional piece of writing.

Top 3 suggestions for improvement:

Add a clear one-sentence thesis statement, italicized, in the Summary paragraph to anchor your argument.

Ensure the Summary paragraph ends with a parenthetical citation if quoting a source.

Smooth out any minor grammatical roughness to elevate the writing even further.

You've tackled a nuanced and sensitive topic with care and insight. With those refinements, this essay will be truly outstanding. Your hard work shines through - keep up the awesome effort!

For HST 321 U.S. Gender and Women's history, I would like to add a case study on women and technology with a particular focus on the story of Timnit Gebru, an AI and Ethics leader who was fired from Google in 2020 after calling attention to bias and the environmental impacts of AI. (I learned about Gebru from Claude.) Gebru then founded the DAIR (Distributed AI Research Institute) that tries to harness AI research for the common good rather than corporate profit. I am thinking of asking students to connect this story to earlier examples of women's ethical questioning about technological innovations.
