I was surprised by how religious it actually was. The Netherlands have very little people in the country who actually identify as religious. In Germany there are quite a few Catholics and Protestants. Also learning more about the influence of the East and West spilt. It is something I would like to learn more about.

Spencer Huntsman

The split lasted for quite sometime, while also being close enough to where there are people alive who experienced before and after the split. It would be important to get there experiences before they are gone. My cultural perspective is very limited having grown up no where close to where this happened. Having a knowledge of the German language helps in finding more direct sources.

Spencer Huntsman

Food, the food in Germany is different to the American food we eat here. They have a greater influence from Turkey for one. And their attitude to food is different then ours, for example their breakfast is much smaller than ours. From what I remember there is also a great emphasis on meat in Germany but there are also a few people who identify as vegetarian regardless. They prefer a large hearty lunch and small breakfast and dinner. While here lunch is relatively small and breakfast and dinner are much larger. So food starts and ends our day. I would like to learn more about how this came to be. How did the culture become this way?

Spencer Huntsman

In this semester one of my favorite classes was this class, because I am always interested in learning a new language. In this class I have learned to construct my sentences in a right way and practice on every class made it happen automatically. Now I do not struggle contracting ideas on my mind beforehand and then say it out loud instead I just say it. The website that we used was the best part because I enjoyed listening how foreign student in German could speak so fluent which gave me more motivation to learn the language.
Definitely! Because the more you learn about different country, the more you get to know you own culture. That is because when I learn something new about different culture I immediately compare it to my own culture. That is the way it helps me to know more, respect, and and tell others about my country's culture. Adina

The way how Germans has informal and formal pronouns. In Kyrgyz language we also have a formal way to say things to the person who is older than us. It is called '' Сиз '' which means ''Sie''. However, we do not use a capital letter for referring to older person. I think it is pretty interesting to know. There's a joke about Arab timeliness where "on time" actually means 1 1/2 to 3 hours late-- the concept of timeliness is very flexible. It was brought to my awareness that Germany has a more rigid idea of timeliness than the US does.

I was very surprised to learn just how intense the stories that are told to children are. They are designed to scare children into behaving and doing things like eating all their food. For instance the story of Augustus who would not eat his soup. He said his soup was nasty and would not eat it. And at the end of the story he became too skinny and died of starvation. In the states we have stories to teach children behavior but nothing nearly this intense. Not to mention Krampus the demon who would torment naughty children. This is vastly different than just simply receiving a lump of coal.
-Michael Erb

Germans take long lunches to eat with family and they also have more time off work. Whether its just rest time or maternity/paternity leave. I think what I find most interesting about learning languages is discovering how the people interact with people back home in their culture. I have a teammate who is from Germany and chatting to her about different cultural norms and different slangs they use was very intriguing. I think the most interesting thing I have learned was the fact that in Germany people rarely say "Ich liebe dich". Saying "I love you" has such a strong connotation that you'd only use it in a very serious relationship. Whereas here in American we use it more flippantly, with friends, family, and describing things we enjoy.

We tend to be a lot more loose with our speaking and our vocabulary, where as in German it seems to be a lot more precise. From learning Hebrew, it shows that English and more specifically American English tends to not care about how words mean certain things very much and use them quite interchangeably. I also think that our grammatical structures are a lot looser because of this as well. It's not necessarily a bad thing as it can make communication a lot more free and fluid, but it definitely shows when learning other languages.
-Wyatt Carlson

I think one of the things that I enjoyed about was the idea that Frau Sibrian said was that Germans will wait until the end for sentences. The whole grammar of the sentence and the whole "meat" of what you're saying can sometimes be all the way at the end, and so you have to really pay attention to the whole sentence in order to properly communicate with someone in German. I think this is a good trait to have which is being a good listener, because you don't have the option to really tune out of what someone saying but still get the general idea in German, or at least it seems that way. Comparatively in English, you can kind of listen but still know what someone is saying. I found this really cool, and who knows maybe I'll become a better listener the more I take German.
-Wyatt Carlson
