Tragedies of American Foreign Policy by Mango \¡o¡/

“My words do not have bitterness but disappointment. May they be a moral condemnation for those who have betrayed their oath… Long live Chile. Long live the people. Long live the workers.” These are some of the last words spoken by Salvador Allende before he (allegedly) shot himself with his AKMS as he sat in office amidst the pinnacle of the American-funded coup d’etat against him. Bombs rained down and many people are still "missing" to this day. American foreign policy continues to destroy nations for the sake of profit. It has done so historically and continues to do so from stories of Pocahontas to today's Russian/Ukraine conflict, time, and time again the United States seeks only to benefit. Even today, Native Americans are routinely disregarded when it comes to regulations and respecting their land, and the United States still chooses to brutalize them. Americans do not acknowledge that things do not happen overnight. The root causes of foreign conflict are deep and complex, the purpose of this gallery is to show that the problem with American foreign policy is not America helping other countries the issue is that America helps to create these conflicts and then steps in to make profits off the war that follows. When in the past America has functionally assassinated foreign leaders like in the 9/11 Chilean coup where Salvador Allende's democratic election was directly challenged by the States; the effects of which still harm Chile to this day. It sets a precedent for how far the United States is willing to go to achieve its goals. When looking at how things like the War Russian-Ukraine have developed throughout the years and who the United States supported in the initial Ukrainian coup d'etat, the motivations of the entire nation show its true intentions.

The Domino theory

The “Domino Theory”, proposed that countries "fall" to communism would lead to neighboring countries following suit. Despite the opposition to this philosophy the "Domino Theory" was the driving force behind America's foreign conquest. This led to the violent war in Vietnam, or in other words, a war against the Soviet Union, which was masked under the guise of stopping the spread of communism. In line with this, America launched another campaign against communism, doing everything in its power to end the beginnings of Chilean socialism.

The Myth of Pocahontas

The story of Pocahontas, which has influenced the view of Native Americans for ages, generally consists of three major elements. First, the Native American woman (sometimes a young child) Pocahontas rescues her (adult) white colonizer John Smith from her father the Powhatan chief, Pocahontas falls in love with John; her barbaric tribe rejects their relationship, and she ends up marrying John Rolfie another (adult) colonizer. One of the major issues with Pocahontas is that it conveniently “forgets” the ethnic cleansing that occurred.

The American and European-backed governments DEMANDED that Ukraine pick a side. Ukraine was forced to make a decision because it did not have the means to negotiate peace by itself. For a fairly long time, Ukraine struck a balance between Europe and Russia to avoid conflict with either side. At the time Putin did not advocate for this same "need" for Ukraine to pick a side. Instead, he proposed working with the West to improve the material conditions of Ukraine. But, Washington rejected this idea and refused to make any concessions, which has now resulted in the deaths of many Ukrainians.

Why Sanctions do not work with Russia

Russia's ability to act does not occur because the United States allows it. Unlike Isreal or South Africa, the apartheid is not supported by the United States. Often times Americans forget how Governments actually work, even when people vote for a Democrat like Joe Biden, he still often does things that most Democrats would not support. The same principle can and should be applied to Putin, although he was democratically elected, that does not mean every citizen agrees with EVERY action he takes. Thus punishing Russia with sanctions as a first line of foreign policy is far less reasonable especially since this war was certainly encouraged by the United States and peace was most certainly not prioritized at the beginning of it.

Alexandria Ocarsio Cortez a U.S. Senator spoke out about the anniversary of the coup. In her video, she mentions how even today there are still many documents that the CIA refuses to release. How, to this day there are 40,000 missing people and no one has faced consequences for the atrocities that happened on that day. After a lot of pressure and organizing there have been some major breakthroughs a few documents were released but there are still many more to be seen. She correctly points out that the way Latin America is shaped today must be analyzed with the understanding of what has occurred in its past. Why do so many people try to cross the border? Why are their countries destabilized? What caused their countries to become so corrupt?

Hasan discusses several examples of how Palestinians are repressed and forced into violence. He mentions how Israeli officials fail to even consider Palestinians to be human. Which in their eyes justifies the continuation of violence against Palestinians. The average age in Gaza is 18 years old with a 56% unemployment rate. Under the conditions of relentless bombing campaigns killing civilians and doctors, the violent groups that arise should be of no shock to anyone. Furthermore, the solution to such an issue is not the further oppression of the people but their liberation, as this violence has been caused by the dehumanization of Palestinians.

Sana Sneed says something very important in her video which is that the "Humanization of Israelis that was never in question is done through the dehumanization of Palestinians". I argue that both groups deserve to be respected and given their own space. But, Palestinians' existence does not come at the cost or erasure of Israelis. Instead, the dehumanization of Palestinians comes with the consequence of allowing Israel's violence to continue. Despite this obvious fact the U.S. media and officials have failed to acknowledge this and it has resulted in world-altering effects.
