Involvement with CMU.pt: 
I was one of the the first faculty of CMU Portugal, did the training in 2007 and since then was director of the dual degree masters in HCI and ETC, scientific director and currently co-director of the partnership.

Impact:
CMU.pt changed my career and life. It opened an opportunity to found a new research institute in HCI which graduated hundreds of grad students and contributed to more than 30m€ of research funding attracted to Portugal.

Involvement with CMU.pt:
From 2009-2012, I served as national director of the CMU Portugal program during phase one and successfully negotiated the renewal of the program for another 5 years. Before that I was awarded the DRIVE-IN project as co-PI, which spun off Veniam, a tech startup that delivered an intelligent network platform for connected vehicles and was acquired by Israeli tech leader Nexar in 2022. 

Impact:
The program changed my life in that it gave unique leadership opportunities in science, technology, education and public policy at a very young age. I was given the opportunity to learn from the best, most notably Prof. José Moura from CMU and Ministers Gago and Heitor, while working for and with outstanding students, researcher and professors from 9 Portuguese universities and Carnegie Mellon. The program gave my startup a head start, not only because of the base IP and team but also due to the access to investors and the broader market in the United States.
