Conventions of the Gothic genre:
supernatural, haunted buildings, bad weather, darkness, danger, architecture, shadows, dreams, heroes and heroines.
The Gothic relates to art, literature, architecture, poems, and also  fashion trend.  People who follow the fashion trend are referred to as 'Goths'.
