Explorers during the time of the Age of Exploration were seeking for new lands, or at least new lands to them, that they could take over and call their own and say that the place in which they had discovered had now belonged to their country. When explorers reached these new lands, they stole from any people that maybe living there, killed people, enslaved them, an etc. The natives that lived in the area would be very confused and believe that these people who are trying to take over their lands were gods. While the explorers raided cities and stole from the, they would try to convert all the people to Christianity, which was unsuccessful. Due to the actions of the explorers, the Aztec civilization practically ended and many had died by that time but those who had not were now ruled by Spain mostly.

Explorers and people from Spain had different beliefs and religion from those whom they conquered. The explorers for the majority believed in one god and believed in Christianity. The people whom they conquered were polytheistic, meaning that they believed and worshipped many gods. The explorers thought that mythical lands in the Bible existed in the new land and that actually motivated people to go looking for them when they did not in fact exist. The natives would pray to multiple gods and offer them gifts. Before the explorers ever came, they thought that something bad was coming due to the fact they spotted a comet in the sky, and a temple had somehow burned down.

Many explorers traveled far distances in search of gold. They also looked for other valuable items such as silver, but gold was a primary search. When explorers found any gold, they would take it without hesitating, even if it belonged to someone else, then they would steal it.

They wanted to have the fame and say that they had founded a settlement in the new worlds being explored. The more land your country owns, the more power the country you live in is. If someone had spice, and traded spice, they were very wealthy. A variety of different spices were traded, and special routes were created just for the trading of spices. Trading posts were also in place. People even sailed far distances, people such as merchants, to sell or gather spices to make profit out of. Many people also obviously used spices for cooking since they had a vital importance in making food.

Henry the Navigator was an explorer for Portugal, and he conducted many voyages, including Portugal's first ever voyage. His voyages were different from most though because he covered more land when he explored an area. He used portolan charts to find the lands he was looking for, and due to this, he found Madeira Islands in 1419 & Azores in 1427. Henry had a few specific goals as to why he was exploring lands, and the following were: new trade routes for trading, spices, to map the coast of Africa, stop spread of Muslim kingdoms, and find a mythical empire of Prester John. He went on to create a sailing school, map the coast of Africa, and many other accomplishments.

As explorers explored new lands, they stole, raided, and hurt many innocent people. They did this just so they could get them out of the way so they could take what they wanted and claim it as their own. Maybe the causes themselves were not necessarily too harmful, maybe somewhat but not a lot, but the people who carried out the plans and their actions were the main reasoning for the harmful effects.

Hernan Cortes, the infamous Spanish explorer, went to the New World in 1519 and claimed land that belonged to natives, killed natives, took gold and riches, and practically ended the Aztec civilization. Prior to this, Aztecs were doing okay until they started receiving hints that something bad was going to happen: a comet was spotted flying in the sky, a nearby lake got flooded, and then a popular temple of theirs randomly burnt down. When Cortes and his men did not follow orders and went out to New World, they took all the goods and items they could and then started to kill people. They even burnt down innocent peoples boats so they would not be able to flee from the city.

The explorers were given lots of gifts of gold, exotic foods, spices, and other items too. However, the killings that had occurred earlier had spread across the lands of the Aztec people. While people were terrified and did not know what to do, the Governor of Cuba had sent out an arrest party for him. A search party went out looking for them, but sure enough Cortes and his crew killed the search party. The explorers continued to just raid cities and take over anything they could. Disease spread such as smallpox and were given to thousands and killed thousands from both sides. Aztec attempted to save their cities, but eventually gave up and surrendered. Now, to current day and time, the ruins from Tenochtitlan have become Mexico city.

A similarity between them was that they both tried to show their religious beliefs to the native people, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but they did it in two different ways. The French were more settle and let them either pick Christianity or their own beliefs and did not really pressure them. However, the Spanish were more demanding and tried to quickly have all natives convert. A difference between them is the overall relationships they had with natives. English/French were more accepting or at least at first to them. The Spanish were sneaky and cruel to them, taking everything they had and harming innocent natives. Basically, the Spanish explorers were harsh acting to the natives while English/French explorers were more so welcoming, even though they were still a little uncertain.

The Age of Exploration was definitely a clash between discovery and invasion. If it were not for the exploring of the time, we might have not advanced and moved to lands as quickly as we did and might have taken longer. However, it was still really an invasion for the natives who already had lived in the area for several years and had their own belief system and just because of their actions had their total belief system and even their ways of life totally destroyed and shifted due to mans greed for wanting glory and owning the world at stake. It is a hard choice to make, but I feel like it was more so an invasion. Plus, the land was not founded by them when it had already been occupied by the natives who lived there.
