Rather than being tortured and humiliated by the Commissioner and his men, a probable future given the not distant past, Okonkwo chose to kill himself to retain the last bit of power he had. At the same time knew the love that his tribe held for him, and how his death could potentially trigger them to realize that the white man would only hurt the tribe as a whole rather than support them. His whole life revolved around him being a completely opposite person from his father. As he grew older he started to loose his fame for being a great warrior. He found that there are not many people with the same passion as him. For example his son and his own clan members disappoint him. He gained hope when he and his friends were able to destroy the church because they felt it was being injustice. In my opinion the two main ones being the fact that he knows he screwed up, my trying to take charge so to speak but also that his tribe did not back him. At one time he was considered one the greatest warriors of his tribe, which ultimately at the end he became less than a "dog". He maybe did not feel he belonged in his tribe. He seemed to be the only one trying to do something about the white colonist.
