- In this chapter Jack takes control of most of the group and gains power

This signals the first major divide in the group and their decent into savagery.

As Jack wants to become the new leader the boys are forces to vote for who they want. They are reluctant to vote against Ralph but don't want to disappoint Jack. Jack then takes the liberty of making his own group and making himself the leader. - While he is here he becomes dehydrated and witnesses the killing of the pig
- Later on after witnessing the killing of the pig due to being dehydrated he hallucinates and has a conversation with the head of the pig on the stick
- The Lord of the Flies is introduced and taunts Simon right before he faints

This makes the reader feel slightly bad for Jack which shows his humanity and makes the savagery that follows much more horrifying.

Ralph recognises that order is breaking down and he blames the island rather than the boys

Piggy sees society breaking down and is quick to blame Jack for everything. 

-"This head is for the beast. It's a gift." (Page 224)
The pigs head is meant to be a gift for the beast but later on represents the savagery and violence that ends up making the beast real.

-"He giggled and flecked them while the boys laughed at his reeking palms. Then Jack grabbed Maurice and rubbed the stuff over his cheeks." (Page 195)
The boys have just killed a pig and they are acting psychotic and their actions not being as horrifying to themselves which shows how far they have gone into savagery.

Ego -The superego incorporates the values and morals of society which are learned from one's parents and others. Ralph is the only one who shows this trait.
