         <title>Group Counseling</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Group Counseling is a very useful resource if used correctly. It can help many students at one time. This will leave more time to help students with individual issues. Some topics are not as personal as others. For example, if you are having a group of students wanting help with college applications you could offer a workshop. This will make it available to all students. Most students won’t have anything to personal in nature to where they may feel embarrassed to talk about. This will free up time and leave ample time to help the students with more personal issues that require one-on-one attention. Group counseling is useful in group building skills and is a common way information is passed on amongst other students. The similarities that students see they have with one another creates a positive reinforcement for all students. <br><br></div><div><strong>Group Counseling Example to Create Safety<br><br></strong>School Counselors aim to be efficient in meeting all students needs. An example that can be used for this is if a high school suffers from a tragedy. Tragedies effect people in different ways. Some people find it easy to express themselves while others don’t. If you started a group counseling session for the school, you will be able to get people to come for help who might be too embarrassed to ask for it. This will Be conducive for all youth and stakeholders. Making sure that the students are taken care of is a main priority for school counselors. “School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools to     address psychological disorders. However, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health               crises and needs”. (American School Counselor Association , n.d.) Crisis even though may be hard to deal with, will be one of the biggest things asked of a school counselor. <br><br><strong>Group Counseling Examples for Academic Success<br><br></strong>A good resource that can be used to provide students with academic success in a group setting would be academic achievement groups. Many high-schools have different programs they utilize to assist students in maintaining a high GPA, preparing for college and provide useful resources to further education. Groups like these are very helpful to students. The promote growth amongst students in their educational needs. It should also be noted that these types of groups can assist them in preparing for everyday real-world activities. There is an abundance of strategies that can be utilized to achieve the goal of heightening their educational needs. It will be best fit for a counselor to talk to students and survey what resources will be most helpful to them. Answers will vary, but you will get an understanding of what the consensus is that the students are seeking. This setting will help all members learn new ways of approaching the common goal of academic success. <br><br><strong>Group Counseling Collaboration</strong><br><br> The School counselor will be asked on many occasions to deal with the different stakeholders. A myriad of roles will be asked of the counselors. One of the biggest is to bridge the gap amongst students and stakeholders. “Group counseling is an integral part of a comprehensive school counseling program and should be included in comprehensive school counseling programs and supported by school administrators and school districts” (Holmes &amp; Kozlowski, n.d.) An example that could be used for this would be a workshop created by the school counselor. One that both students, parents and teachers could join. This would make all necessary parties brought together. This is where topics such as time management and other helpful resources can be gone over in order to build a solid foundation for the student.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Consultation Practices</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Consultation with students is a very imperative aspect to the counseling profession. Many times, you will receive referrals from other primary stakeholders. As a counselor, your priority is to bridge the gap amongst students and stakeholders. Students will go through an Abundance of changes throughout their lives. Dynamics will change at school and personal lives. “Although the landscape of school counseling is ever-changing, school counselors continue to provide a myriad of services that are responsive, preventative, direct, and indirect in nature” (Baker &amp; Warren, n.d.)<br><br><strong>Consultation Examples to Create Safety</strong><br><br>“Consultation is an indirect, although critical, component of comprehensive programming that is often overlooked” (Baker &amp; Warren, n.d.) Many times its hard to associate that consultation carries so much weight in the entire counseling process.  Making sure that the assistance with youth and their emotional health will pay dividends amongst the school. The overall betterment of the students creates a proactive environment which makes it easier for all students to flourish in. “The ASCA National Model 2012 emphasizes the responsive and supportive roles consultation can play in the school environment. School counselors can utilize consultation to empower teachers and provide students with enhanced educational experiences.” (Baker &amp; Warren, n.d.) Consultation will significantly increase student’s behavior which will lead to a safer environment for students and stakeholders. <br><br><strong>Consultation Examples for Academic Success<br><br></strong>Consultation efforts primarily can be done in one-on-one settings. These different consultations can focus on different things. One of the biggest thing’s students have trouble with is time-management.   Its hard having to juggle between personal life, extra-curricular school activities and homework. Students often find themselves in detrimental situations due to not being able to adjust to the changes. Having students keep a journal alongside a planner will be instrumental in the long-term success. Teaching students this at the early ages of their high-school career will significantly benefit them through high school and ease the transition into college. <br><br><strong>Consultation Practices Collaboration</strong> <br><br>The working together isn’t only going to be beneficial for the student, but the parent as well. If parents can have a firm understanding of what’s going on with their students, it will help them to adapt to their child’s needs.  Everyone learns at their own rates and understanding your child’s will be helpful. Consulting both parent and student will be conducive for all parties involved. This will help the students high school experience. </div>]]></description>

It takes a look at the Achieving Success Everyday (ASE) group counseling model. This model attempts to bring the students personal and social development along with schooling. This model can be implemented within the K-12 setting. this method seems more likely that it would be applicable to high school students. The ASE model helps students learn the following:<br><br></div><div>Improve academic self-concept (specifically as it relates to goals and goal setting)<br><br>Acquire skills for improving learning<br><br>Achieve school success<br><br>Relate school to life experience<br><br></div><div>Take responsibility for actions<br><br>All of these are vitals things which students need to be able to do, not only in personal lives, but school as well.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Individual counseling in school is the most effective strategy in the delivery systems. The school counseling is briefly meet with each student one on one to and counselors employ their expertise by identifying student problems as well as resolving these problems using established counseling methods. After an individual counseling finishes the counselor may find the issue beyond their scope of support and would then find the most appropriate next action is to refer the student to other professionals not employed by the school.<br><br>Individual Counseling in a School Setting</div><div>https://www.school-counselor.org/topics/individual-counseling.html<br><br></div><div><strong>Examples of how Individual Counseling Create Safety<br><br></strong> In the high school setting the individual counseling could ensure the safe environment by meeting with students one on one to provide strategies to help deal with hormonal changes and allowing the students to vent out their frustrations in a healthy way to prevent any build up of the anger resulting in violent acts.<br><strong><br>Examples of how Individual Counseling Create Academic Success<br><br></strong>As school counselor in the high school setting the role is to prepare the students for the adulthood and the by meeting individually with the students to design a  college preparatory plan for each student based on their strengths that are discovered in their individual sessions. <strong><br><br>Examples of how Individual Counseling use Collaboration<br></strong><br>In highschool each individual students comes from all different cultural backgrounds, it would be important to do a one on one session with ESL parents to help with transition from school to home. A personal news letter translated to different language will help connect the parents with what is going on with their child. By meeting with the student individually they would be able help them process the culture shock they  might be experiencing in the public school system verses what happens at home.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Core Curriculum Lessons</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>School counselors will develop a lesson that touches on the development of every student we encounter reach their full potential academically, socially, or in career development. This lesson can be taught in group counseling or individual counseling. The setting can be classroom, office, auditorium, or any other high school facility that compliments the lesson plan. "Whether presented by the teacher alone, a teacher-counselor team, or the counselor alone, the developmental counseling core curriculum must be  provided to all students" (Dollarhide, 2008, p. 169) <br><br><br><br><strong>Examples of how Core Curriculum Create Safety<br></strong>Core curriculums can create and promote safety simply by its curriculum. Id like to think in theory, a fire drill, tornado drill, lockdown drills are simple versions of core curriculum promoting safety. Even further, in the high school that Mr. Curtain works, they had an assembly about drug use. It was int he form of group counseling in the large auditorium. The counselors brought in a former drug addict. She was only 20 so she was able to relate to the students. She explained the role she had in destroying her life. She also mentioned the harm it did to her body. The friends that were killed by overdose. The depression and suicides of other friends. They followed up a  month later with parents who lost their kids to overdose and drug use. The shock factor of the curriculum was very emotional. Students left in tears some times. This was a curriculum to create a drug free high school environment. <strong><br><br>Examples of how Core Curriculum Create Academic Success<br></strong>A good example of how a core curriculum can create academic success is again a group counseling setting. A school counselor can visit in a class room and discuss with students good studying habits. A teacher teaches material and test them on it. Most teachers do not teach on ways to study, they just tell you to study. School counselors can create their curriculum and teach different studying techniques, and time management techniques to keep students organized. Honestly,  organization and lack of study habits is the main problem with students in high school. Most bad grades are a result of late or missing assignments and or lack of studying before a test. <strong><br><br>Examples of how Core Curriculum use Collaboration<br></strong>School counselors while creating core curriculum can use collaboration techniques in all of the examples above. The drug free assembly is collaborating with every teacher and principal to arrange a good assembly time for everybody. It was also collaboration with the local drug rehabilitation center. Core curriculums can also collaborate with teachers during the academic development. <br><br>Counselors can use collaboration as well with parents to develop and encourage those study and organization habits at home, after school curricular activity arrangement, and emotional support during what is a very challenging and life altering time. <strong><br><br></strong>Dollarhide, Colette T..          <description><![CDATA[<div>Individual student planning is the development of a path that will compliment the individual students skills to create or develop their potential. These individual student plans should be very specific to the students learning styles and capabilities. <br><br><strong>Examples of how Individual Student Planning Create Safety<br>I</strong>ndividual student planning can create safety by making sure students are classed appropriately. I have seen a case where counselors have taken rival gang students and scheduled their classes and academic plans on opposite sides of the building. Students with heavy anger and control problems I have seen be in more of a secluded part of the building with a security presence near. <strong><br>Examples of how Individual Student Planning Create Academic Success<br></strong>Each students has an equal right to succeed in school. The counselor is responsible for putting together a plan and path for that student to have the most success academically, socially, and career development. Career development may be a bit tougher considering that most high school students do not have a solid idea of what they want to do in life. As their academic careers progress, a counselor has the ability to evaluate the students best skills and habits and point them in directions of career development. <br><strong>Examples of how Individual Student Planning use Collaboration<br></strong>Individual student planning can use collaboration with community resources to help students get jobs, internships, and career involved help. Individual Student Planning can also involve parents collaboration. In the case of a child with a student who is consistently falling asleep in class, he would need to collaborate with the parents on creating an appropriate sleep schedule for the student to get more sleep. Counselors can also use collaboration with teachers in case a student needs extended times on test, more one on one after school help, or any other services to accommodate the student. <br><br>Dollarhide, C. In high school students parents are not as involved as they were with the younger grades and to help change that the school counselor could host parent workshop to help the parents build better connection with their teenagers and influence their development. This is build confidence in the school system and parents will be more supportive to the students and inspire them to also care about their academics. <strong><br><br>Examples of  how to use Collaboration Practices for other stakeholders<br><br></strong>There are a plethora amount of stakeholders a school counselor could collaborate with to ensure the safety of the students in the high school setting. One example could be other school counselors they could combine their ideas together to develop the lessons plans need to be taught to the high school setting such as drug use prevention, bully prevention and mental health awareness. </div>]]></description>

The professor discusses the correlation between safety and the counselors and how the counselors play a role. He even discusses the three points of our missions statement with academics, socials, and career development. He mentions the personalized education because "every student is different".          <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Core Curriculum Lessons<br>School counselors will develop a lesson that touches on the development of every student we encounter reach their full potential academically, socially, or in career development. This lesson can be taught in group counseling or individual counseling. The setting can be classroom, office, auditorium, or any other high school facility that compliments the lesson plan. "Whether presented by the teacher alone, a teacher-counselor team, or the counselor alone, the developmental counseling core curriculum must be  provided to all students" (Dollarhide, 2008, p. 169) <br><br><br><br>Examples of how Core Curriculum Create Safety<br>Core curriculums can create and promote safety simply by its curriculum. Id like to think in theory, a fire drill, tornado drill, lockdown drills are simple versions of core curriculum promoting safety. Even further, in the high school that Mr. Curtain works, they had an assembly about drug use. It was int he form of group counseling in the large auditorium. The counselors brought in a former drug addict. She was only 20 so she was able to relate to the students. She explained the role she had in destroying her life. She also mentioned the harm it did to her body. The friends that were killed by overdose. The depression and suicides of other friends. They followed up a  month later with parents who lost their kids to overdose and drug use. The shock factor of the curriculum was very emotional. Students left in tears some times. This was a curriculum to create a drug free high school environment. <br><br>Examples of how Core Curriculum Create Academic Success<br>A good example of how a core curriculum can create academic success is again a group counseling setting. A school counselor can visit in a class room and discuss with students good studying habits. A teacher teaches material and test them on it. Most teachers do not teach on ways to study, they just tell you to study. School counselors can create their curriculum and teach different studying techniques, and time management techniques to keep students organized. Honestly,  organization and lack of study habits is the main problem with students in high school. Most bad grades are a result of late or missing assignments and or lack of studying before a test. <br><br></div>]]></description>
