While starting to draw realistic photos, the child will seek out help from an adult if the drawing does not come out the way they were hoping. They will become more critical of themselves and what art they are creating. Much of a school-age child's life revolves around their social interactions. They are becoming more aware of their own actions, as well as the actions of others. With this awareness, as well as the self-criticisms, often comes comparison. Comparison can lead to the child feeling self conscious or insecure of their artwork.

The gang start of art development typically occurs in the school age years (~8-12 years). As the child ages they begin to draw based on how things depicted in reality, rather than their imagination. Body parts will become more realistic and less exaggerated than in previous stages. Clothing will be more detailed, including things like patterns, and the child will start to draw more gendered figures when drawing people.
