The miners who went to find gold had many tools and strategies of finding gold. The miners used methods such as Panning, Puddling, and Shaft Mining, the most basic tools were a shovel and pick and normally didn't bring in much gold. Panning took creek beds and washed out mud and dirt to find gold. Puddling separated gold and clay in large machines for efficiency. Finally, Shaft Mining allowed miners to work in large groups and min underground for gold.

The Gold Rush was a popular period of time when over 100,000 people called forty-niners populated the California Territory. These people populated the California Territory because once they herd gold was found in California on January 24th, 1848 by a man named James Wilson Marshall they wanted some gold for themselves. So everyone started traveling to California to dig for gold and in august of 1849 there was over 4000 people already. In fact the total worth of gold found by miners was $750,000 and the total worth over all was $2 billion.

The Donnor Party ended up leaving way too late in the season, they left on April 14th, 1846. This was too late for the location that they were starting in. While on the Oregon trail the leader of the party decided that they had found a short cut through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was supposed to shave off weeks of travelling. This ended up making them travel many extra hundreds of miles. They traveled as far as they could until there wagon axle broke and then they had to stop their travels. They got caught in one of the worst winters ever in the mountains. The previous 81 of the party ended in the end of only having 45 surviving. The party members (after running out of food) resorted in cannibalism in effort to survive. Finally in early 1847, with half of them already dead, they got rescued.

So when it was cold out, they wouldn't have the proper clothing, get sick and then they could die. When it was warm out, they could get dehydrated, and then maybe die if not given clean, drinking water. Some other hardships, was that when you crossed the water, you could fall out or be walking in the water and then when you get to a deep part, you can't swim, then you would drowned. Another thing was Indian attacks, if you weren't protecting your supplies, family, and yourself, you could of died, your family could of died, or they may take you supplies. Also medicine was a big hardship, if someone got sick, you would try and make medicine to help them, but most of the time the medicine wouldn't help them, then they would eventually die or a kid would see medicine lying around, thinking it is juice, drink it, then they would get sick, and then they would eventually die. Also, children and adults would fall, from the slow moving wagon and then they would be crushed beneath the heavy wheels.

They were told that a shortcut would shorten the trip significantly. The path they took was not a shortcut and added extra time to their trip. They ended up being trapped in snowstorms in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for most of the winter and ran out of food. They had to kill their horses and oxen and when they ran out of that they were left with nothing. Eventually they resorted to cannibalism to survive.

The Oregon Trail was a very interesting part of history and played an important role. Did you know that on the Oregon trail, sometimes people charged $100 for a glass of water? This was because the Oregon trail went through some very warm parts of the country.

It was a group of 90 immigrants led by brothers Jacob and George Donner. They encountered a lot of rough terrain and rough ground. (This becomes important later) In 1848 a simple carpenter named James Marshall discovered a weird yellow rock near the mill that he worked at called gold, -at the time he didn't think it had much value he would later realize his mistakes-. At the news that a strange new valuable rock was found in America people from all over the world came to get rich quick. People from places like China, Mexico, and Britain came looking for the new mineral. Since there were so many people in California the natural resources ran really low so because of this there was constant Native attacks. This lead lead to a lot more bloodshed between the Californian Indian tribes and the settlers, so to stop this California passed a legislature saying that enslaving and kidnapping Indians was LEGAL. In Conclusion because of this and many other things (like the fact that the Natives were forced against their will to fight in the military) between the years of 1849 and 1870 the population of Native Americans in the state dropped by 120,000 people.

The Donner Party began it's trip from Illinois to California dangerously late in the pioneer season. They had fallen behind by taking an untested short cut and were stopped by the weather. The majority of the 87 people were children. A few pioneers managed to hike to safety. Emigrants engaged in cannibalism in order to survive; however, not all of the emigrants did. Out of the 87 people only 48 survived and made it to California.
