How did the fashion for royal women differ from fashion from the common women?

Fashion for royalty and the common woman were different in many ways. Women in royalty were required to wear certain items, colors, and styles. Because the royal women were wealthier they, "...had greater access to fine materials, as well as being allowed to wear richly decorated clothes. However, they were still confined to certain styles. Anyone who didn't adhere to clothing rules was subject to punishment” (Sandeen). They were required to wear gowns and sleeves. The sleeves would be stitched on depending on the woman's desire. Women in this class were also required to wear a hat or head covering and shoes had to be flat/low heeled. The queen and her immediate family were the only ones allowed to wear purple. As for the other upper-class women, " Lesser noblewomen wore gold, silver, grey, black and crimson" (Sandeen). Because of their status, beautiful needlework and designs decorated the women's gowns.
As for the lower class women, fashion was much different. The lack of riches and social status determined how the lower class women dressed on a daily basis. Lower class women, "weren't allowed to enjoy fine materials, but had to make do with cheaper ones like wool, linen, and sheepskin, although trimmings made of silk or taffeta were fine" (Sandeen). These cheaper materials did not come in vibrant and fun colors. Instead, they came in colors like brown, russet, dull blue/gray, and beige. Peasant women did not have access to assistants to assist them in dressing, so the style for them was much simpler. They wore an apron and an unboned bodice that would usually lace up in the front. They wore no jewelry and wore the same shoes that were not made from fine materials. The law during this time placed a large gap between women in the upper class and women in the lower class
