Before the Industrial Revolution the Government was Laissez Faire (hands off). With the Industrial Revolution happening the government had to start taking control of some things. Railroad prices started sky rocketing and big business men started to have more control over the government. So the government had to put out some regulations limiting railroad prices and monopolies in businesses. The government didn't take complete control over everything but weren't Laissez Faire anymore, they were only pinkies on.

Many machines came out with the Industrial Revolution doing the work that people did with their hands, only faster. Farmers started using machines because of this reason. Because farmers didn't need as many workers the workers started moving to factories. With everyone moving into big cities factories were able to hire more people to manage to newly created machines. Because of this there became less farmers than factory workers.

William Jennings Bryan ran for President in 1896, his opponent was William McKinley. Bryan was a representative of the Populist Party (the peoples party) which was made out of farmers. Bryan was also a Silverite which meant that he wanted gold and silver to back up the money supply. When he lost the election we kept our money centered around gold and the Populist Party fell.

McKinley was a Republican that believed our money system should be based off of gold. McKinley ran, and won the Presidential election in 1896 keeping our money being based off of gold instead of silver and gold. McKinley used the railroads to his benefit by giving people from around the United States tickets to come see him speak on why he should be President. McKinley was known as the "Front Porch Speaker" because of this, he simply gave tickets to see him speak on his porch.

The most interesting thing I learned in this unit was that George Pullman created his own town for his workers. The houses were in excellent condition for people to live in. Even though the workers had great living conditions there was a lot of negative impacts on the workers too. They were denied their right of speech and were banned from drinking alcohol and going to sleep later than their predestined bed time. The conditions of their town got so bad that they ended up going on strike for three months.

Railroads were created during the Industrial Revolution. Railroads have to be to their destinations at a certain time and leave at a certain time to make sure that they don't run into another train. The biggest problem with that was that each city had their own time that was slightly different the other cities so the train stations had to come up with a time zone that every city had to enforce. The cities then had to switch their clocks to the train stations time zone for everyone to follow, and we still use that to this day.
