Gatsby is the protagonist of the novel. He is a mysterious and extremely wealthy young man who throws massive parties every Saturday at his West Egg mansion. Rumors circulate at parties about who he is and where he comes from. Later in the novel we learn that his real name is James Gatz, and that he comes from a poor family in North Dakota. He then changes his name to Gatsby.

Gatsby enlists in the army and falls in love with Daisy Fay, but must go to fight in the First World War. He learns all about the aristocratic life because he works for Dan Cody, a millionaire who teaches him the customs of rich people, and thus builds the character of Gatsby.

He is the narrator of the novel. He comes from a wealthy Minnesota family. After fighting in World War I he travels to New York to learn about the bond business. He lives in a bungalow in West Egg, next door to Gatsby's mansion.

He is Daisy's cousin and is in a relationship with Jordan Baker. He strikes up a friendly relationship with Gatsby and, after Gatsby's death, returns to the East.
