I started doing ICT in schools in 2003, before that I worked as an ICT-consultant. The school I started working for had a teacher doing ICT. He thought it was too diffucult to both teach and administer ICT, so the school decided to employ a pure ICT-person. So I don't teach at all. But I try to keep up on what happens in the classrooms. All that I knew from my experience as an ICT-professional I have used in the tasks/challenges I have met at the school.

I have found the resources here very very useful to define my role and as a guideline towards improving my own performance. Unfortunately, the articles also shed light on my limitations and gave me a lot of food for thought!
Of course no ordinary full-time teacher can possibily take care of the described tasks listed in the articles. I am no exception there. My view is that the lesson to be learned, here, is that effective TEAM WORK is the only key to success.

Right now I think I have them, however it’s completely necessary to do courses and to go to events where other schools share their experiences, usually in those places you can learn a lot. I wouldn’t be able to manage the infrastructure, but sometimes it’s enough to have some background about it , just in order to be able to make proposals and discuss the needs.

The last long course I did, one week in Brussels, was about eSafety in European Schoolnet. Since we were implementing G-Suite and giving accounts to all our students that was the course I (we) need, and so, because we could use the learnings in a very short term the course was very good. So, I think that you have to identify in each moment which are your priorities and try to find some training that fits them.

I feel 'weak' from the hardware perspective and specific things regarding security so, I found this course very helpful. In Italy, a school textbook editor organized a good online school this year for ICT school responsible since this position was set by the Ministry in all Italian schools.

Being an ICT manager is a hard work, more than ever if you don't have qualification to go throw it. It's a hard work but at the same time a very interesting one. I try to learn as much as possible by internet courses and keeping in touch with people who can help me. Students like being in this new way of learning and I think we have to try harder to give them the a new chance even if this mean improve our skills on networks, apps and so on.

Time is my biggest enemy. Its so important to be organized. 860 students, 70 teachers and 1 other ICT person to work within the school. There is no limit to issues, queries and problems. I keep a record of all my "Incidents" and categorise them under a set of headings. Every 3 months I review same with the principal and determine the knowledge gaps or service gaps in the school. This works well except when finance is needed as this is a scarce resource. Being assertive also is critical as it helps to ensure equitable access to ICT resources.

I think it is very difficult to find courses to develop the skills of ICT administrator. In my case, I use youtube and tutorials to improve my skills and to help my colleagues when they have some problem with their laptops, their smartboards or with the wifi connection. This course is the first one about developing ICT administrator skills for me. Moreover, I need to learn more about hardware.

I know my skills and competences are basic since I have been learning and improving them day after day on the job. I am studying and attending all the courses I can. In Italy the National Plan for digital innovation by the Ministry of education is supporting ICT coordinators with forma l training by tutors and trainers from Regional School Offices (Servizio Marconi TSI in my area). They are really extraordinary ICT trainers!!! Moreover, I am an active member of eTwinning which favours digital innovation through international projects and through courses aimed at professional development. I have attended several courses on teacher academy and I have found European Schoolnet academy courses very interesting and complete.

For me I can say that I'm really happy that the teacher education at the university had a special course to educate ICT administrators which you could attempt as a "subject" to study. So I could get a lot of skills during my formation.
But of course there are still a lot of sklills to get... For example how to manage a large network over a longer term of time, how to plan the development of the infrastructure and how to handle the costs.
I'm learning a lot in meetings, discussions with ict-administrators of other schools in our area which the local government is organizing. And there is also a big amount of self-education...

I'm not an ICT administrator, fortunately! My skills in ict are basic. Anyway I've always tried to use technology in class and tried to offer activities to students that involved the use of computer to improve their skills. My experience is similar to Peter's. I also teach in a large school (1200 students and 80 teachers) We have two networks, Admin and Students / Teachers. I don't have any certification or qualification in IT skills but I do have passion and interest. I'm self taught. I've ben ICT co-ordinator now for 10 years and in that time the necessary skills are: organisation, patience, facilitator, assertiveness and understanding. I keep a weekly log of issues that arise and with the deputy principal decide which items take priority, which ones I can do myself given the time I have and which ones I assign to our IT technician, who is on site once a week. I recommend carrying out a complete ICT Audit every few years and from that schedule a phased investment and procurement of hardware and resources needed to maintain and improve ICT skills in your school. Every year i give a CPD to all staff on some small idea using ICT with students. It is well received and there is always a buzz of enthusiasm afterwards.

I am not currently ICT coordinator, but I was. But I helped the ICT coordinator of my school to do his work.

I absolutely share everything in Terry Freedman's article. "Being responsible for everything that has a plug on it.": I love it! That's what happens to me daily! I've been having some training after being appointed "Digital Animator" in my school last year. I was the one who loved using devices with her students and had some self-acquired knowledge and skills. There's still further training scheduled for me and some other teachers and I still go on trying and experimenting and asking technicians (when I met one) for help and suggestions. I know there's still a lot to be learnt!
"An ability to see the big picture" ("Vision" in the essential skills by CoSN: this is another statement I completely agree about, but....how intensive, demanding, difficult this can be!

I have many skills because I ever study for my updating. Last year I was F.S. in ICT and AD in my school, but this role is not for ICT administration but for to integrate ICT in education. For me, in Italy is necessary first define the role and objectives of the figures that are necessary for the introduction of ICT in the common practice of teaching disciplines. Serve at least 3 figures recognized at the institutional level and that of the employment contract: the lab technician, network administrator and digital resources, the expert teaching with new technologies. Once you institutionalized these figures with the definition of the intervention will be possible to identify the specific skills required. It seems clear that in order to play well their specialist role, can not perform teaching assignments, but will be engaged full time and their roles.

I have succeeded at B Level assessment exams and I am participating to MOOCs constantly, as well as following courses here as well. Sometimes I am participating in seminars when they are conducting near my home city and family and job times allows it. I am also running for an Msc in Information systems.... It would be very helpful to have access to a database with case studies of situations an ICT admin could face, and choose what I need.

I'm not sure if I have the skills needed for ICT administration at the school... first of all because these are not just technical.
The training for improving has to be a wide range format, including: MOOCs, tutorials, practical courses (preferably in the own school), actualization courses, practical guides,... and even technical support from distance.

I think that wehatvere skills we have today, we will always need to continue to develop them. It would unprofessional of us, as teachers not to continue our own professional development.
I think you need to discover both hardware and software skills. Implementing and managing a whole-school ICT infrastructure is not the same as either teaching the likes of the ECDL or teaching computer programming. Do courses exists which are acknowledged by Education Boards to train the teachers in teaching computers??
I think some of our 'Level 8 and 9' courses run by colleges have their emphasis wrong. We seem to be learning more about past theories and principles as opposed to new and modern pedagogies.
