Building trust is the basis for relationships that allow honest sharing. Shifts that occur in us, in others, in our communities will require us to rebuild trust, even if we are from the community. Trust takes time, it cannot happen on our preferred timeline.

Carrie – Resourcefulness—making the most of what’s available: From my mom and my community, I learned the value of shared responsibility. People shared food, traded resources, cooked for each other’s kids, and made sure no one went without.

Rene – Hope that systems can change to serve people better: I grew up seeing how difficult it was to know where to turn for help, especially for families new to poverty. That drives my belief that systems can and should change to meet people’s needs more equitably.

Dignity for every person

Equity: Everyone should have equal opportunities regardless of socioeconomic status.

People feel that they should have the right to use tobacco.

The tobacco industry has money to promote false narratives.

Promotions of false healthier alternatives (ex. vaping) is making our public health messaging more difficult to be accepted.

Trusting the wrong voice

Claudia - immigrants are illegal, "criminals"

Jenny - people who do not work are "lazy" and do not deserve healthcare

Cameron - LCSW, tons of assessments for families - some preventing the work that is needed

- "America First" guides this conversation and mindset; creating inequities for "others" such as immigrants

Harmful stereotypes that are decades old about LGBTQ+ people being detrimental to society and youth.

Immigrant and poor communities draining societal resources and do not contribute to economic productivity.

- Scarcity- the idea that we don't have enough, that resources are limited.

• perfectionism- it's too costly to get things wrong, especially for communities ff color

• undervalued- communities that are traditionally underserved may not feel valued and get the care they deserve.

We need to change our narrative from individual to collective. our mindset needs to be for community and the resources they need

We need to share the responsibilities for changing the dominant language, not stay in silos, think critically and share ideas and information around shared values, and build out the cohort nationally, we have more power in numbers and consistency.

How to appeal to the masses? Using individual values to shape the narrative.

Need to have louder voices sharing the narrative.

Consider the shifting populations when sharing the narratives.

Based on the level - speak to them to go to the next level to eventually have everyone on the same level.

Arm the smaller masses with the tools needed to feel empowered and the ability to encourage them.

also, history has shown us that those communities are often the ones that are able to get the work done.

-2nd 3 statements - feel strongly about diversity being a strength, important to call out diversity of gifts not just of race, gender, etc. Important to talk about the full picture of strengths folks can bring forward to collaborate together. Statement 5 feeling some frustration that we haven't learned from history, that there isn't more of a movement to dismantle systems of oppression.

-Last 3 statements - can see a sense of hope with these 3, empowering more than the previous 3. To remind us that we have the power.

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.

But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Shaping our mission and vision statements can be informed by this narrative work. Enables us to use simplified words, creates a starting or ending place that folks can get behind without getting stuck on specific language.

A narrative could help unite the actions and activities that residents are executing as part of a Safety & Community Resilience dashboard. Can unite us, show how those things have to do with each other

Strong collective messaging if we had a narrative for our Food Access work. Give multiple perspectives to demonstrate we all have the right to be fed.

We think we need more time in the community to build relationships pre and post our policy work.

We have to make sure we focus on using collective messaging to address sensitive issues that could cause a dominant narrative and could affect policy and systems development.

2) Narrative is part of my organization strategic priority and therefore, we will use materials to provide technical assistance to our Affiliates and other stakeholders.

3) Use narrative to inform data.

We stressed the importance of uplifting the voices of the communities we work with, aligning with community organizations that have shared values and letting them spread the key messages.

1. We've talked about "all people are worthy of dignity, love, and respect. This speaks to a value we have as part of our mission statement. We mentioned diversity is our greatest strength, although this may be seen as a means to check a box and is not full inclusive and active within our institution.

2. We are applying this when we discuss our programming generally.

3. We would include our leadership in this process to better understand their values in this current climate. Incorporate our partners and general community members (not just to check a box) but to reflect and listen to the values our community holds. This presents a new opportunity to rethink how we communicate beyond our program.

The idea is to work alongside them and provide resources and opportunities to amplify their voice and empower indigenous culture.

Dominant Narrative:

The project challenges the outdated narrative that "Indigenous cultures are disappearing or need to be "saved" by outsiders."

Transformative Narrative:

Our project affirms that Indigenous cultures are vibrant, living, and self-determined, shaped by the people themselves and shared with the world on their terms. By integrating storytelling with visual art and sustainable platforms for expression and economic opportunity, The Story of People honors both heritage and the future.
