In my second day, my task was to draw one of the objects I chose from my collection; It was a shiny and worn out brush. Expect we had to draw it using a long stick (with a pen taped to its end) so I could start with a new perspective, and challenge myself to work outside of my comfort zone.
Within 30 minutes, I managed to draw the brush, toying with the idea of filling the shining handle with black and leaving whites to represent its shimmer. It could’ve worked better if I had more skill in this particular style, but I was satisfied nonetheless because I tried something new.
After finishing, my challenge was to draw the brush again, but now I couldn’t lift the stick from the paper. I figured this meant I had to adapt myself to try even more ways of doing this, and how many possibilities, and even positions I had to take (moving my body around, changing angles) so I could come up with my drawing.
It worked pretty well, and I feel like this was a fresh approach to promote me to try out new things!

We started today separating the class in two groups, one had the photography class and the other perspective. I went with the photography class first, and we were taught about depth of field. We also learned about the camera itself and how to use it. I took 9 photos, 3 in shallow depth of field, 3 in medium and three in deep. To make my task easier, I organised my objects i a way I could take the pictures where all of them appeared without any obstruction.

After taking the photos, I had my perspective drawing class; I started with the basics (horizon lines, line perspectives) and using a pencil to measure my drawings. I feel like I have to practice more in this particular area, specially because I have difficulty learning new things. I started my drawings focusing on the room’s corners, and working out with my line of sight (eye level) to measure accurately as possible. after dividing the line based on my measuring in four, I started drawing the lines, all ending at the end of my line of sight. I have to draw my objects from photography class with charcoal and using a shallow depth of field for tomorrow.

For today’s photography class we studied lighting, specially working using flash and black and white/ contrast between dark and bright. Using monochromatic modes for our photos, we took pictures of three chosen objects using the flash and contrast to create the final look. I really enjoyed mine, mainly because my objects are shiny and the contrast was really charming.

For Miss Lauren’s class, we studied framing in photography, including the rule of thirds, symmetry, reflection, leading lines, and others, so I could take pictures of my objects using those techniques. Because my objects are shiny, I found it hard to make the pictures show the contrast they can produce, specially in dim light. I enjoyed using symmetry, mainly because I love the way the whole frame gives the impression of organising itself in front of your your eyes. My favourite photos are the ones I specially use that technique along with the reflection of the objects.

I really enjoy working on stop motion, as I have in the past, and using symmetry to create a GIF of one of my photo sequences is what I have in mind.

Making filters for today’s class proved to be a creative process. With various materials to choose from, I had to adapt them to my phone camera (taping them over it) and as a result I’d get lots of different visuals and mixing of colours I really liked.
My favourite filters were ones that felt almost psychedelic to look at, in the way they distorted reality and making everything look dream like. Most of my experiments with the materials I used turned out great for my liking, specially with the ones with some sort of liquid in them (water bottles, lotion bottles, soap bottles) as they achieved the dreamy appearance I wanted. It’s difficult to find filters like these in programs such as photoshop, because they mess with the image in a way only a real object would — and that makes me proud of what I achieved today, as I was really hoping to come up with very distinct filters.

Presenting our 3D letters today gave me lots of insight about my art. My exclamation mark my desired effect of expression and suddenness to the point of violence for the viewers, and it captivated them. The association of a chaotic energy with the expression mark was already something apparent, but the way I accentuated it with bright colours/black background, pointiness and the aggressive presentation resembling a bloody spear certainly left its mark. One thing people mentioned and I agree is the use of a base; the expression mark alone shows what I wanted and the base did take some central attention from it, even after I reduced it in size. Making the upper part glued to the centre of the dot was also something people mentioned, and how it could’ve given the balance needed for a baseless object is also something I kept in mind. Overall, the critics were really inspiring and my whole work being understood so very easily even if I work with a “messy” style is a proud achievement. It shows my message was understood without problems and it’s simplicity wasn’t lost by its chaotic outlook.

Today’s class was about deciding what was my 6 core values, something that required me to pause and think about myself and what’s around me. My decisions were made mainly because of my past experiences and what I’ve learned from life as a whole, so it was a very personal moment to think about six topics that I could classify from least to most important. I wrote my thoughts about my choices on my sketchbook, which were: Kindness (most important), trust, development, imagination, uniqueness and adventure. All of them were chosen based on my experiences along the years. It made me realise and discover that I’m a person that seeks others to see what’s good around them and in them, and this is why I’ll expand with the topic of adventure. And sharing my message was easier than I thought, because most people of my age can relate to a sense of adventure and what’s out there to discover. My values are more important to me as an artist, leading me to create and explore different and new ideas, and expand my imagination.

Because my text was somewhat about freedom, I chose between various concepts on what would I focus about, and it turned out to be the struggle of an immigrant, or someone who was born in a family of them, like myself. The project still stayed true to the personal touch I wanted, and by using my own story and the imagery I chose I managed to build a strong connection between the pieces. For the production of the placard and the poster I need to find pieces of real cloth to make the hijab and paints to finishing it off. Using some painted cardboard I have in my house is already a huge step for the production in general. For the location I was thinking about positioning my work around a fence, as it is connected to the concept of borders/control.

I didn’t use screenpint for my posters mainly because I did not know it was nescessary and miscommunication happened. My placard is different from my posters as it is much simpler and easier to make than the painted work of my posters. I used minimalism as the key communication, and the contrast of colours with the 3D letters plus the hijab made out of real cloth makes it feel abstract yet effective. I mainly chose minimalism because I thought of mixing up my rough style with it, and the end result is just amazing! Minimalism also helps my message stay clear for the public, using bold colours and chunky words.

In this project I will work with the theme of: light humour and the idea that humour can be created without making fun of anybody. Some people think humour revolving around racism, homophobia and other offending topics are the top tier humour around, and I'm going to try sharing a fun zine and animation that can prove that the best kind of humour is the one where no one is harmed in the way.

The zine:
For starters, I will remake my 'How to make something funny' zine and make it more professional looking, and also make five or more prints of it.

Progress! I decided to draw the zine on a drawing tablet, so I can later make small 2 - 3 frame animations for each square. I also decided to not add colours and only go with black and greys because I was worried if I added too many colours the printer wouldn’t work properly. My zine is A3 sized.
Inspiration dump: From old Nickelodeon cartoons, to educational animations on YouTube; mixing a simple “tutorials” with expressive drawings. It’s everywhere, even in the way I animate Letters.

My own ideas mixed in: I added original characters to fill some roles in, and I think their weird design blends really well in the style I chose. Monsters, creatures, humans, weird humans.

Animation planning: Using Sony Vegas PRO, I edited and animated the frames. I plan to record my voice reading the zine as it rolls onscreen.

Simplicity was my main goal, along with the weirdness I love to add in my things. It’s a really personal zine if I think of it, because it shows my personality and inspirations quite clearly. I like expressive, so it’s expressive. I view my world as this wonky, weird thing that can be as light as a feather. I take lots of inspiration from cartoons from the 90’s. I like it’s bold, in-your-face that could be classified as “ugly” style.

I’ve chosen my identity after I reflected upon my personality and ideas, sketching them down on my sketchbook, and I finally settled for adventure. Research, both primary and secondary will be the key to strengthen my understanding of my chosen identity, and sketching down any ideas and collecting reference pictures will also be of aid.

I’ll be using multicolored paper, a cardboard box, and scissors (among others I listed down on my sketchbook) to build my scenario, as it is composed of layered, carefully cut papers stacked together. With the ability of creating a perfect scenario for my idea, I’ll be making sure to translate what I want onto the papers.

I’ve written down all I can think of in terms of representing my work on my sketchbook.
I think I’m both mixing the abstract and the figurative with my work, as I’m thinking of creating a scenario where the surreal meets the pos-apocalyptic, using imagery of gas-masks with fantasy elements. Both gritty and magical, mysterious. My costume will fully symbolise what I mean, as I’ve drawn on my sketchbook.

I don’t think what I did was the best I could have made, mainly because my hands shake a lot, making the trees not looks as detailed and intricate as I wanted them to look. I might try making a new prop tomorrow. Meanwhile, I have the three finished layers, and the fourth one I’m thinking of using translucent paper for the lighting effect.
I also finished my mask, painting two X’s on each canister, and added more content to my research about movement and the making of paper lightboxes.
Maybe if I use thicker paper (though it will be hard to cut through and that’s a problem) I can make the trees look more intricate in my next attempt. All of the layers are painted black.

By planning ahead and writing a proposal I’ve learned how to manage my time and ideas better, specially after writing them down on my sketchbook or here on my Padlet.
Some ideas might take better interest when I rewrote my project brief, and some useless ones were left out.
All my actions and ideas did become clearer, and my goal is now set almost definitinetly. But I still will leave the planning written down on my sketchbook.
Using the scamper technique showed I actually used it before knowing it fully well.
EDIT: I will go to Kalunga to buy materials after lunch.

Sculpting a doll fully proved to be more difficult than I remember. I have only vaguely finished the head, and I did not like the results. I turned to 3D, but my pacing proved to be too slow and I could only finish the dolls head. I also used modelling clay instead of cold clay, as it proved easier to sculpt.

This project proved most successful, as I have completed my goal of making a looping animation about body dysphoria and my inner struggles with schizoaffectiveness. I have extended my research to my sketchbook, and also to my research folder, where I could explore its themes and overall appearence for the final result. The project started as a drawing with its same name, and from there I started expanding my horizons researching about my illnesses and its impact on my life. I had also taken note and laid all the main inspirations on my research padlet, one of them being JUNJI ITO, a japanese comic-book artist who's main focus is the horror coming from the mundane. It's black and white comic-book style and even the noir style inspired me to create the first drafts of DYSMORPHIA, using rough lines and delicate ones, mixing both together to create a sense of "disturbing" harmony we see in ITO'S works.

First, the project was to have the whole body in scene, but that made the overall view of the animation too cluttered, as it already was. I cut it to the torso, arms and heads, and fit them in irregular squares so they could look "stitched" together in a way. The notion of stitching something together is extremely important in my work, as I tend to go back to my other inspiration, this one musical, being TWO HEADED BOY by NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL where I can see myself as someone with two heads. The whole sequence of my animation was organized in a way the eyes were always the one that took some sort of iniciative to the happenings, the right-main eye watching and the other eyes distracted, and when it rolls back, all eyes stare at the viewer, somehow silently judging them. I wanted to portray the feeling of never finding true peace when you're in a cataconic state. The eyes of the crying lady looping with its never ending tears, the subtle smile of the eyeless man, the tar filling the image and coming from the ears, the never-ending talk of the mouths and the distortion of the body were all a dance I had to coordenate before animating the full piece, coreoghapically analysing each square and giving it its emphasis, be it lines thin as paper or rough ones, to show torment and anxiety.

After I animated each scene, I put them together in PHOTOSHOP and looped the 3 seconds of the 9 frames I've created, making the lines shake in a way I wanted and making the chaos I've seeked come to life. I put the first sketches on my sketchbook, and also the first concepts here, on my padlet.
If I could re-do this project, I'd make more frames, giving more actions to each square and overall making the animation a little longer. It would give me more time to coreograph my work and make it look more polished.

Working alongside LEN and HELENA was very effective, as our final animation was a success. We started developing the ideas with lots of references from animations, all listed on my research, and the overall style of the idea we were working with. In a sort of "collage" look, we took pictures from actual trash and made it look like textures, using paper as our main source material. The character design was made by me, and I took inspiration from relatively simple styles like ADVENTURE TIME and other cartoons to create the main characters. We also divided the background making in six frames, and I worked on the DIRTY CITY look, using materials like TRASH, ALUMINUM FOIL, WRAPPERS, PAINT and CARDBOARD. In the end, the grittiness I was looking for was successfully achieved. For the characters, (as we had three of them) we did our research on how binpeople dress and used various patterns made out of garbage as their palette.

Animating on AFTER EFFECTS is something new to me, so I, along with my partners, tried to understand the software first and foremost, using the models we did (we left gaps in each joint for mobility reasons) we animated around 20 frames, and along with it, I designed the whole audio sequence on SONY VEGAS, using royalty free sounds for the sequences.

Our client was very grateful for our work, and enjoyed how we designed our set and characters. If I could re-do this work, I'd improve its animation, and overall look. In my opnion, the time limit was something that held us back almost dramactically. We had no choice but to do a very quick work.
