In chapter 17, pages 51 and 52, Kathie Appelt uses typographical effects in order to add effects to the sounds and dialogues expressed. On page 51, we see the directions of the breeze pushing against the pines;
"Left.
        Right.
Left.
        Right."
The direction of the swaying trees are shown by offsetting the text on the pages of the book.

We can see this again on the next page, 52, in a different form--
"in a very tiny voice, J'miah asked, ^{'what is that?'}"
