The Minangkabau society is one of the world's largest ethnic groupings, consisting of people who follow the world's largest matrilineal culture.

The Minangkabau culture and civilization in Malaysia emerged in the 16th century in Negeri Sembilan, following the enormous migration of the Western Sumatera Minangkabau people across Southeast Asia.

The livelihood and cultural legacy are presently under threat owing to a variety of factors, including a dramatic increase in migration among people from traditional longhouses in search of a better living in the city.
