He lived in Alabama and joined the navy upon graduating high school. After returning from the navy,around 1946, Carter became a leader of the klu klux klan. He even carried out a murder, but the charges were soon dropped. Later in his life, he realized how much good he could do. He turned his life around and turned to writing books and speeches. Carter's other  major works include: Gone to Texas (The Outlaw Josey Wales), The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales, and Watch for Me on the Mountain. These books focused on the life of soldiers and government. The novel very clearly touches this as Little Tree grows up living with his Cherokee grandparents. They teach him multiple lessons like do not take more than needed, the earth is your friend so do not take her for granted, and to not let others put you down. As Little Tree lives grows, he faces many challenges including racism. Racism was a huge problem he faced as the whites treated him different. They would push him around like he was nothing and take no consideration of him or his family. Little Tree overlooked them all. He knew they were not worth his time. Instead he put his time in the earth and family. Grandma is a woman with a kind heart. She always puts her family first and makes sure Little Tree is maturing as a young boy should. Broken by Lifehouse represents moving on through grief. This song would be played at the end of the novel which is when Little Tree looses many of his loved ones. This song is suitable because it is about being broken down from sadness but continuing on with your life as best as possible as Little Tree did. 
2. I Love the Mounatins by Little Fox would play when Little Tree is running through the mountains and just enjoying what the Earth has to offer. It pairs perfectly because it is a song about just loving the mountains as Little Tree does. 
3. Crying alone instrumental by Jurrivh would play when Little Tree is taken from his grandparents.
