The lawyer narrates the story and is always trying to change the situation, whether that is looking for a response or trying to understand Bartleby. His behavior baffles the lawyer. The lawyer believes he is doing a good deed as a Christian allowing Bartleby to stay. Paul's father could play the role as an antagonist in the story because of the role he plays in society. Paul's father is a conformist and does everything that society wants him to do. Paul would rather die than be like his father.
