Non-Conformity

"I was three years old... standing on a chair in front of the stove... to cook hotdogs." (Pg. 9)
This is a good example of the theme because it goes against the unspoken rules of raising a child. Usually an adult would be cooking for a small three year old child, not a three year old child standing in front of a hot stove cooking for her family.
This picture of a kid waiting for food to be done is a good example of the theme Nonconformity.

Forgiveness

"Once I got my breath back, I figured he must be right. There was no other way to explain it." (Pg.66)
This is an example of the theme Forgiveness, because when Rex dropped Jeannette into the hot spring, instead of saving her from drowning he kept telling her "sink or swim". After Jeannette finally got herself out of the water her dad told her he would never let her drown and he knew she could do it. Jeannette forgave him for this, and many things throughout the story, even when she shouldn't have.
This picture of a dad hugging his daughter is a good reflection of all of the times Jeannette forgave Rex for the bad things he has done.

"Never did build that Glass Castle'" (Pg.279)
This a good example of the theme because all throughout Rex's life he promised his children that one day he would build the Glass Castle for them to live a luxurious life in. But now Rex is on his deathbed and the Glass Castle never got built. He broke his promise to them, but they all knew that it would never actually be built.
This picture of two people pinky promising is a good reflection of the them Broken Promises.

Fantasy vs Reality

"One day Dad told us to dump it in the hole. "But that's for the Glass Castle" I said.... the Glass Castles foundation slowly filled with garbage." (Pg. 155)
This is a good example of the theme Fantasy vs Reality, because, after the family moved to Little Hobart Street, Rex got their hopes up saying that he was going to definitely build the Glass Castle here. So the family took most of their time digging a hole for the foundation of their fantasy, the Glass Castle, but the reality of it was that it was getting filled with garbage, and would soon be the huge garbage pile of Little Hobart Street.
This picture of a garbage pile in front of a house is a good reflection of the theme Fantasy vs Reality because it is a pile of trash in front of a house.

Unconditional Love

"But despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like-what the world would be like- without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had." (Pg. 279)
This is an example of the theme Unconditional Love, because even after the hell that Rex has put the family through, Jeannette still loves him. When he is on his deathbed, she realizes that he has always loved them unconditionally.
This picture of a child kissing an old man on his deathbed is a good reflection of the theme Unconditional Love because it shows the love between two people at all times.
