Dewey’s impact on curriculum comes from his ideas as a major contributor to progressivist educator values. Dewey had three major solutions he used when criticizing curriculum developed without the students’ best interest in mind. The first solution is that students’ minds should be engaged and through psychology the curriculum. Which can also be read as guiding students through the logic of the subject matter. The second solution is to help students understand the underlying concepts of a subject without overly focusing on engagement to the detriment of students. The third solution is to have a curriculum that is student sensitive but not student centered in regards to pedagogy.

Addam’s impact on curriculum comes from her work at Hull House in Chicago, Illinois. During her time at Hull House, she wrote about her observations on how she would improve education. She was an advocate for moving away from strict formal education to encourage students to learn inside and outside of school. She also encourages educators to remember that the theories we use in education should be readily adapted to fit the needs of our students.

These ideas can be interpreted as the sharing and fusion of ideas, and the ability education provides to all in order to understand and process these complex ideas fully. Simultaneously, Du Bois (1987) embeds this appeal in a claim that “men know so little of men” (p. 584). (Du Bois, W. E. B. (1987) (Connelly, F. M., He, M. F., & Phillion, J. 2007. p. 446).

Tyler authored a foundational text for curriculum development called Tyler’s (1949) Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction. This can be seen with his Tyler Rationale (1949).

Tyler believes the people designing the curriculum can pull from the problems their communities are currently dealing with in order to train the skills students will need in the future. This can be seen from this quote “I would suggest that you collect sample information of several sorts. On the one hand it might be well to draw upon your memory, your experience in a given area of life such as in your civic life, to jot down the activities that you engage in as a citizen. Also list the problems that you have encountered as a citizen. Imagine this information as being illustrative of what might be obtained from a considerable sample of adults in your community. In the light of such information, can you suggest possible objectives which are implied by these data?” (Tyler, R. 1949. p. 22).

This is reminiscent of the sabretooth curriculum story with lessons in school being deliberately inspired by the activities and challenges of the adult members of the community.
