Caption: The interior of the restored Ennis house. Tons of natural light accompanied by warm and inviting electrical light really shows the beauty and uniqueness of the architecture in the Ennis House.

Origin: Frank Lloyd Wright, a very successful and influential artist and architect, built the house way back in 1924. The house was built for a client who shared Wright's passion and intrigue in Mayan culture. The mayan inspiration is most clearly seen in the concrete blocks that make up the walls and ceiling of the house. Carved into each block is a geometric pattern that is heavily inspired by ancient Mayan carvings.

Material: Concrete bricks

Possible Date: 1924 (Month that the house was finished is missing)

From Which Culture: American and Mayan Culture

Use: Besides from serving its common purpose, which is to be a home, the Ennis house has also served as somewhat of an icon in American movie culture. Most famous for being the setting of popular movies such as "The day of the Locust" and "Bladerunner (1985), one could say that the house has seen its share of Hollywood fame. The house is also considered to be a historic piece of art. The Ennis house foundation was set-up in order to raise funds for the renovation of the home and renovation proved to be successful resulting in the house being sold in 2019 for a staggering $18M.

Credit:

Info
https://www.archdaily.com/83583/ad-classics-frank-lloyd-wright-ennis-house

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t87mgS8HUKQ

https://www.mansionglobal.com/articles/frank-lloyd-wrights-iconic-ennis-house-sells-for-18-million-208367

Picture
https://www.latimes.com/business/real-estate/story/2019-10-25/frank-lloyd-wrights-iconic-ennis-house-sells-for-18-million

Caption: The Irony of a negro policeman, one of the many great works of Jean Michael Basquiat. Depicted in the painting is an African-American policeman drawn as a cartoonish figure.

Origin: Jean Michael Basquiat was working at Unique Clothings Factory before he was discovered by the company's owner after exhibiting his great artistic talent. He later went on to create various art pieces, which up to this day remain relevant pieces that speak a message about particular social issues plaguing our society.

Material: Oil on Canvas

Possible date: 1982

From which Culture: African-American

Use: The painting was used as a platform for Basquiat to voice his opinions on African-Americans joining the white dominated police force. Basquiat's view on this was that the irony exists in African-Americans joining and enforcing a system meant to enslave their own people. As seen on the painting and from various analysis' online about it, the humanoid figure seems to be encased in a cage seen on the hat the figure is wearing, symbolizing the plight that African-Americans were in during that time.

Credit:

Info
https://www.wikiart.org/en/jean-michel-basquiat/ironew-york-of-the-negro-policeman

http://www.jean-michel-basquiat.org/irony-of-negro-policeman/

Photo
http://www.jean-michel-basquiat.org/irony-of-negro-policeman/

Caption: The picture was taken during the celebration of the end of World War 2 in Times Square New York. It shows a soldier, assumed to be a sailor, take a woman in his arms and kiss her out of pure joy and relief knowing that the long war has come to an end and peace has been established.

Origin: The photo above is entitled "V-J day in times square". It was taken by photographer Alfred Eisenstadt on August 14, 1945. Eisenstadt took to the streets of New York on that day, just like many Americans after hearing the news that the Japanese Government have officially declared their surrender. Crowds were spontaneously celebrating in the streets as a sign of relief that the war has finally come to an end.

Material: Photograph (Black&White)

Possible Date: August 14,1945.

From which culture: American Culture

Use: This photo, while mostly used as a symbol of peace and celebration after war, has also been used to highlight a particular issue in our society, sexual harassement. The woman in the picture, who scholars speculate to be Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental nurse, tells her version of the story of the picture in a different tone. Part of the #metoo movement, Greta tells us that the soldier kissed her without consent. This is in line with the description that Eisenstadt said about this particular soldier as well. "I noticed a sailor coming my way. He was grabbing every female he could find and kissing them all — young girls and old ladies alike."

Credit:

Info
https://veteransbreakfastclub.org/who-were-the-people-in-the-times-square-kiss-on-v-j-day/

https://aboutphotography.blog/blog/2020/3/27/v-j-day-in-times-square-by-alfred-eisenstaedt-story-behind-the-photograph

Picture
https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/objects/v-j-day-at-times-square-new-york-city

Transparent bathrooms are the solution to hygiene fears, dark and sketchy bathrooms, and dirty unsanitized public bathrooms.

Origin: In Tokyo, award winning architect Shigeru Ban has designed a new form of public bathroom in which the windows are transparent. The transparency of the windows become opaque once the door has been locked from the inside, so that people cannot see the person using the bathroom inside.

Material: "Smart Glass"

Possible Date: Around 300 installments were done between 2017-2019

From Which Culture: Japanese Culture

Use: The bathroom stalls were put up to combat the country's problem of dirty and very unsanitized bathrooms. Imagine finding the actual notebook of one of the most brilliant minds to ever walk the planet. Within this notebook exists a whole new world, a world that only Da Vinci could see until now.

Origin: The Codex Leicester was a manuscript written by Leonardo Da Vinci around the 16th Century. The Manuscript became popular in recent times due to its purchase by billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Gates has since lended the manuscript to be displayed in various museums for the public to view.

Material: Paper

Possible Date: Between 1506 and 1510

From Which Culture: Italian Culture (Ancient Italian)

Use: The Codex was used by Da Vinci to develop his ideas. Think of the Codex as a brainstorming diary that Da Vinci used when he wanted to write down the ideas in his head. There are multiple topics and practices discussed by Da Vinci in his codex such as the topics of the earth, moon, and sun, and even the waves in our oceans. What makes the Codex so unique is that is is written in Da Vinci's signature right to left writing style.

Credit:

Info
https://www.businessinsider.com/look-inside-the-codex-leicester-which-bill-gates-bought-for-30-million-2015-7

https://new.artsmia.org/davinci-codex/

Picture
https://www.businessinsider.com/look-inside-the-codex-leicester-which-bill-gates-bought-for-30-million-2015-7
