Alcohol makes it increasingly challenging for the parts of the brain which control balance, memory, speech, and judgment to do their tasks, leading to a life full of injuries and other negative consequences.

Most people are aware of the effects of smoking on the lungs and heart, but very few are aware of the effects of nicotine on the brain. “Nicotine mimics several neurotransmitters, [which send signals] in the brain. [Since nicotine is] similar in shape to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, signaling increases in the brain,”
explains Lori A. Russell-Chapin, PhD, professor at Bradley University's Online Masters of Counseling Program.
Nicotine also stimulates the release of dopamine, resulting in an euphoric sensation.
She explains that the brain gradually reduces the number of acetylcholine receptors to compensate for the increased signaling activity. Nicotine tolerance develops as a result, necessitating the usage of more nicotine in the future.
Nicotine also activates the pleasure centers of the brain, simulating dopamine, causing your brain to link nicotine use with happiness.
The nicotine in cigarettes alters your brain, leading to withdrawal symptoms when you try to quit, according to the National Institutes of Health. You may have a range of adverse effects as a result, including anxiety, irritation, and a strong desire to smoke.
Unfortunately, many people seek for another cigarette to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms when these symptoms occur.
Because your body is accustomed to having nicotine in your bloodstream, the changes that occur in the brain as a result of this cycle establish a dependence on nicotine, which can be difficult to overcome.
While nicotine's effects may take some time to manifest, harmful side effects to the heart and lungs are expected to be the first that a smoker would notice.

Smoking causes disease and impairment, as well as harm to nearly all of the body's organs.
Upwards of 16 million Americans suffer from an illness brought on by smoking. At least 30 people live with a major smoking-related illness for every person who dies as a result of smoking. Cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, are all diseases caused by smoking. Smoking also raises the chance of tuberculosis, some eye illnesses, and immune system problems, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Each year, secondhand smoke causes roughly 41,000 fatalities in nonsmoking grownups and 400 deaths in infants. Adults who are exposed to secondhand smoke are at risk for stroke, lung cancer, and coronary heart disease. Children who are being exposed to passive smoking are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer, sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, middle ear disorders, more severe asthma, respiratory symptoms, and slower lung growth.

These effects can last for a few hours, and during this time people feel drowsy, and their heart rate and breathing slow down.
