Summer Week 1: Principles of Marketing - Marketing Principles in Job Search: Assume you are about to graduate. How would you apply marketing principles to your job search? In what ways would you be able to create, communicate, and deliver value as a potential employee, and what would that value be, exactly? How would you prove that you can deliver that value? by Jonathan Gordon

When applying marketing principles to a job search, I would be able to create a sense of personal value that would interest the employers I am submitting an application to. I would be able to communicate that value by creating a detailed resume that would highlight my strengths, prior experiences, and education. Delivering this value would take place while completing the job I am being hired for. The value I would be creating, communicating, and delivering would be my potential as a future employee for the company, and how I can bring a positive and motivated attitude to their working environment. I would prove that I could deliver that value by making a good impression on the employer during the interview by showing what I could bring to their company. This application of marketing will show the employers that I am a dedicated and motivated prospect. This motivation that is shown will help the employers make a decision on whether or not to hire me. The application of marketing principles in a job search could make or break the ability to find a job that will hire you.

In order to apply marketing principles to my job search I would develop a value proposition regarding myself. Creating a clear, easy to read, and memorable resume will help companies and other interviews, to see and clearly understand my value and what I can bring to the company. I can increase my value by expanding my resume. Volunteering and other community service can help add value to my resume by showing companies hard work ethic, regardless of the pay. By communicating my values and beliefs and how they will make me a good asset to the company, I am improving my value to the company. Being involved in the company's public affairs and attending the company's public events (such as events they sponsor, public outreaches, charity events etc.) can prove my dedication and loyalty to the company. This increases my values and improves my chances of being hired. Thanking the interviewer for taking the time out of their day to interview me can also help increase my value by making me seem polite and respectful to my superiors. Using marketing in job searches can greatly improve my chances of being hired and can help shape how companies and interviews see me.

There are numerous different marketing principles I would apply to job searching. First of all, I would create a personal brand. Things like skills, experiences, and attributes will contribute to my brand. It will allow me to stand out among other applicants and build personal connections with employers. I would also use things like internships and career fairs to network. Networking will help me build connections in the industry. Doing research to make sure the brand or company aligns with my personal brand will allow me to optimize my experience in the company and develop a passionate connection to my work. These are all things I would add to my resume, which will further show my worth to desired employers. Another resource I would utilize is applications and websites like LinkdIn. This helps put my name out there and further connect to companies of interest.

If I was about to graduate college and start my job search, I would ensure that my resume and cover letter presented a potential employer with my qualifications and skills to reassure them that I am a strong candidate for their position. I will make sure that my resume is well organized, provides all previous work positions, and also includes extracurricular and service activities to reiterate that I am a well rounded candidate. I would work to create a “brand” for myself by using social platforms such as Linkedin which would allow me to engage with employers while creating a strong network with my college connections. My profiles would include information about my strengths like attention to detail, my dedicated work ethic and willingness to learn. I will use my college education and experiences to know my strengths and strive to improve my weaknesses. Learning to highlight my skills and working on my “elevator speech” will give me an advantage over other new graduates entering the workforce. Employers are looking for candidates that add value to their business while working toward a common goal and I will prove that I can be an asset. I know that my first year of employment will offer me more experience than I would ever get in college and I will be so excited for the opportunities I have in front of me.

If I were about to graduate, I’d approach my job search like a personal marketing campaign. First, I’d identify my product. This would be my skills, experiences, and qualities I bring to the table, and assure they align with what employers are actually looking for. To create value, I’d highlight the ways I can contribute to a team right away. I’d communicate this through a resume, thoughtful cover letter, and an online presence that reflects who I am professionally. LinkedIn, for example, wouldn’t just list accomplishments but show what drives me and how I work with others. I’d deliver value by showing up prepared, asking good questions in interviews, and being open to feedback. My value as a potential employee lies in being dependable, collaborative, and genuinely invested in doing meaningful work. To prove that, I’d use examples from school, internships, or leadership roles where I made a real impact. This would emphasize who I am and how I can make things better for the company I’m applying to.

I would make sure to list all my qualifications and skills, which would eventually lead to creating a personal brand for myself. By displaying my qualifications and experiences, it would help me engage with future employers and extend my social network. This would eventually lead to me developing a personal connection with companies and extending my brand. But while in the process of engaging with other companies and employers, I will also make sure the one I choose aligns with my brand and has a good effect on my future. Another thing I would add to my resume would be my previous/current involvement with the community and extracurricular activities. I would prove my value as an employee by consistently delivering high quality work, taking initiative to solve problems, and contributing positively to the company's goals and objectives. Additionally, I would also prove my value by always being authentic and honest, ensuring that the company trusts me and that my work aligns with their values.

Assuming I am graduating high school, I would apply some fundamental marketing principles to create, communicate, and deliver my value as a potential employee. To convey I am in the correct place to a potential employer, I would make sure I apply to a business that aligns with past experiences in some way. For instance, if I were applying to be a cashier at Starbucks, in my resume I would mention my experience with counting money for clubs. And if I were applying to a job where I may not have as much experience, I could still use my resume to highlight my soft skills that will help in a potential career. To illustrate the product which is myself, in a positive light, I would ensure I include experiences that demonstrate leadership qualities but also exhibit a desire to improve myself and learn from others in my resume. For the purpose of indicating my "price" as an employee, I would speak to the interviewer with respect. I would also mention my exposure to something that relates to the job. This is where applying to a job where you have a decent amount of interest or experience becomes important. This is because having more exposure in a field makes it easier for your "price" or value as an employee to look appealing. To promote myself, I would use my best accredited references and share my professional networking social media, like my LinkedIn.

If I were about to graduate school, I would approach my job search by using various marketing skills. I would make sure to have a strong and put-together resume that included all of my skills, experiences, and qualities. I would include things like my strong work ethic, my willingness to learn, as well as my voluntary service for my community. This would give me a great background and hopefully would lead up to creating a personal brand for myself. Having this would also help employers figure out if i'm what they need. I would make sure to create a strong profile to help businesses learn about me, and what values I have and how I can benefit their company. Also while i'm engaging with other brands, I would be sure to choose aligns that also help my brand. I would prove my value by solving problems, giving positive goal ideas to a company, and delivering high quality work. I would also make sure to always be honest, gain trust from a company, and be thoughtful about every opportunity given to me.

I would apply marketing principles like the 4 P’s to advertise myself. I would promote myself by going to job fairs and networking with potential employers. I would use the rest of the P's to narrow down my search for the job I am looking for. I would then show my experience by using a resume and LinkedIn to highlight my strengths for the job and promote my personal brand. The main value I would promote is customer relations. I would emphasize my experience working directly with customers during my high school summer job, where I built positive relationships with my customers. To prove to my potential employer I am able to deliver the value I claim, I would use references and a cover letter. I would write a cover letter backed up by a reference from my previous employer. I would also use other references gained through other experiences such as adaptive ski coaching and Boy Scouts.
