How do you define music? How do you interact with music on a daily basis?

I would define music as basically a work of art. Creating music takes a lot of thought and creativity since all the notes involved have to support each other in order to sound smooth and clear. I've always admired music and had different tastes but one genre that truly defines what I like is classical. I recently picked up the piano and have learned different songs not only classical pieces but others that have my interest. I would say that one way that I interact with music on a daily basis is through playing the piano located at Maple Hall. I usually practice some of the songs I know there almost daily, hoping the people around me can appreciate the music I am bringing to life.

I do love the classical genre side of music since a simple melody on the piano can be converted into a masterpiece with only a few chord adjustments. I would say however, that the rock genre is my favorite since one of my favorite bands is Skillet, a Christian rock band. I used to listen to Skillet a lot back in middle school and it came back into my life recently with their new Unleashed album. I was hesitant at first to get into their new music since their old songs were amazing, but after a while of listening to them I could hear the true meaning of the songs.

What kind of music does the station play? What are the composers you hear? How would you describe your experience?

I heard a lot of different pieces of music including pieces from Beethoven, Alexander Glazunov, and Molter. Molter specifically played a trumpet concerto #2 which didn't only have the trumpet, but many instruments that contributed to the melody like strings, oboes and violins. It was quite pleasant to hear so many instruments working together to produce such a wonderful melody. I was listening to this station while doing my computer science homework, and I feel like it helped me relax while I tried figuring out how to solve the problem I had with my code. Most days when I do this type of homework, I can't concentrate because of the voices in many songs, but the classical music relaxed me.

How does the group “innovate” musically? By performing popular music? By performing a few pieces outside of the canon?

The Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony show many different events planned for 2017/2018 as well as 2018/2019. Some events include performances not for all audiences since they try to appeal to different people with various tastes in music. The Dallas Symphony for example has a mariachi based concert in May to obviously try to pull in a different audience similarly to the Fort Worth Symphony which has an event for Harry Potter, and Disney Music. Even though they are trying to pull in different audiences, that's not to say that they won't play popular classical music which is included many times throughout the year of events. Both symphonies are trying out new things to gather new audiences and pull them in to experience the beautiful sounds of their performances.

What kind of music would you like to see performed? Do you see yourself in the music that is being performed? Why or why not?

I would like to see more classical pieces over songs that aren't well known or that aren't often played in a symphony. A River Flows in You would be a great pieces to be performed in front of a live audience since it draws people in and ask how a simple song can be played in such a complicated fashion. In most classical pieces played on piano, I can definitely see myself in the music since I play piano myself. Having said that, whenever I hear a piano being played, I understand what that person is having to do in order to make the piano sound the way it does to the audience. How hard they press the notes, use the petal, and even noticing if they are putting any emotion in to the piece they are playing.
