Cheshire Cat VS. Vermin

The Cheshire cat and Vermin have many similarities to each other and play basically the same roles. The Cheshire cat directs Alice to different locations where she needs to go. Vermin guided Coraline through the tunnel to get to the other side. Both cats guide the main character to places they need to go to complete their goals. The Cheshire cat had the ability to freely appear and disappear while Vermin knew where all the portals were and used them to disappear and appear in different places. They are both extremely calm for some unknown reason. I think their calmness also helps the main character relax when she doesn't know what to do or how to react. Their calmness is very eerie as if they've gone through the same process before. They both have some level of cowardice in them as whenever there is danger they disappear without us noticing.

The Rabbit Hole (Alice) VS. The Door (Coraline)

Both the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland and the door in Coraline share similar purposes of taking both characters to the supernatural world. Both tunnels are also shown by the animals that the character followed, in Alice in Wonderland, the rabbit lead her to the rabbit hole, and in Coraline, the jumping mice lead her to the tunnel in the door. Although these tunnels are similar, there are also many differences that can be seen. To elaborate, in Alice in Wonderland, Alice falls into the rabbit hole and it takes her into the other world. She is unable to come back out from the supernatural world and when she did, it was a "dream". In contrast, Coraline is lead by the jumping mice and climbs through the tunnel behind the door, which is only open during certain times of the story. When she enters the tunnel similar to Alice, she leaves by going to sleep and waking up in the real world. However, the Other Mother, the monster/villain in Coraline, traps her in the supernatural world, and she escapes through the tunnel instead of waking up in the real world.

Wonderland VS. the other world

Wonderland is a world of wonders where there are mystical beings such as fairies and elf like creatures. The other world is a world created by the beldam/ other mother. The other mother was able to create living creatures from toys or flowers. In the movie Coraline Wybie makes a reference to witches when he asks if Coraline is a witch. He says that she's like a water witch since she was looking for the tunnel at the time. Both worlds have mystical references and beings. For Alice, she followed the rabbit into the rabbit hole and fell into the world. The rabbit hole acted like a portal transporting her into a different world. For Coraline the main portal was the small door in the living room. Each world is full of strange things. Wonderland is more lively with strange creatures like the smiling cat or people made of cards. The other world was a world created to replicate the real world. The pink palace was the main setting for Coraline and that is where everything took place. While time at the other world was always nighttime and mainly took place at night, in Wonderland time was relative. It always stayed 6 o' clock in Wonderland which was tea time for the mad hatter. In the other world no matter how long Coraline stayed it was always night and I think time is also relative in the other world.

Personal Connection

One connection that comes to mind would be exploring new worlds and facing your fears. This is especially a problem for me because I'm scared to take risks. In the movie Coraline she travels to the other world which seems like a perfect version of her reality, only to discover that it's actually a trap set by the Other Mother. Sometimes we can be drawn to things that seem to good to be true, and once we take the chance, our hopes are ruined. This is the exact reason I'm scared to take risks. I don't know whether or not I'm going to succeed and sometimes it'll look good, but turn out bad. Coraline takes the risk that if she doesn't find all the eyes of the ghost children, the Beldam could sew her eyes with buttons. That's a huge risk that she's taking and it shows her bravery. This is something that I should strive for as I've always shied from a risk like that. -Jason

In Coraline, the antagonist is the other mother, whereas in Alice in Wonderland the antagonist is the Queen of Hearts. They are similar to each other because they both serve the same purpose of getting rid of Alice/Coraline. However, I think that the differences outweigh the similarities. One difference I notice as I compare each fairytale is the way the antagonist approaches each protagonist. In Alice in Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts takes Alice into the courtroom, however she listens to the Mad Hatter and turns on Alice as she demands, "Off with her head." In Contrast, the Other Mother takes a more strategic approach. The Other Mother uses Coraline's real life problem and simulates a "perfect world" to lure Coraline in. They both served the purpose to eliminate the protagonists, however they approached them in different ways.

My personal connections for both of these stories, similar to Jason's, is to take chances and risks. Both Coraline and Alice are adventurous people and I think I can be adventurous as well. However, I can get anxious to try new things or try something I think I might fail. A great example of this is when I am playing volleyball. Sometimes the set isn't always perfect and I have to stay confident and swing at the ball hard, because if I hesitate it will affect my timing. I think playing volleyball and a good connection because I need to be confident and take risks to get a break point. - Joseph
