"Little Things Are Big," is a title relating to the effect that the encounter had upon Jesús Colón. He was thinking very much about how he could have offered his help and service to this woman, who was with her children, with her hands full in the middle of the night, but didn't because he feared how it would be perceived. He felt that he failed himself and the woman because he didn't extend his hand to help her, when she was in need. This moment taught him and had a large impact, as the encounter lasted at most, 10 minutes, way back on Memorial Day in 1955, but he still reflects on the moment to this day, and has learned to grow from the mistake he felt that he had made.

I think he wrote this story to show how assumptions no matter how small have a big impact on decision making. I think he titled his essay "Little Things Are Big" because even small encounters like the one on the subw ay can have a big impact on someone's life. Jesús did not even talk to the lady, yet he cam away from that encounter with a life lesson.

Jesus' dilemma was that he thought about helping the woman with the baby, suitcase, and 2 kids. He wanted to help the woman. He knew he should. But he also knew where he was, what he looked like, and the time period and the racial dispute and prejudice of the time. He was in a subway station, early in the morning, with not many people around. That was probably a huge part of his decision. He knew what he looked like, and what it might look like to the woman, if he tried to help her. So he decided to just go past her. He never forgot his decision though, to not help the woman.

Question 1: Jesus Colon´s dilemma was that he wanted to offer his help to a white woman and her children to get off a train. In the back of his mind, he knew that his skin color was not the same as the womans, which might make her feel threatned. He was thinking about how his skin color could change the womans reaction. For example, the woman might react calmly if the mans skin color was white. He was also taking into consideration what would happen if she would scream, or make a scene and wonder why a Puerto-Rican man came up to her late at night. In the end, he decided not to help the woman, and he later regretted it.

Jesus´s dilemma was if he should help the struggling woman with a baby in one arm, a suitcase in the other, and two other young children off the subway. He was debating if the lady would even accept his help since he was half-Black and half-Puerto Rican man on the subway late at night and she was a white woman during the 1950s.

I think he wrote this story to show how damaged he is by stereotyping. He is scared to help a struggling woman just because he is scared she will not accept his help due to his race. He wrote the story to show how the view on other races makes him scared to talk and help others. I think he titled it ¨Little Things are Big" to show that little things can make a big impact. If only he helped she it might have a big difference in her day. His choice not to help her also was big because he did not choose to express himself which hurt him even more.

He thought that the lady needed help since she had a baby, two children, and a suitcase, but this was the 1950s when racism was more common, and since he was half black and half Puerto Rican, and the lady that needed help might have been prejudiced, something bad might have happened if he had approached her, like the lady screaming or being rude towards him.
I believe Jesus wrote this story to reflect on what he did and to share his story with others to use as a life lesson and teach. It’s titled “Little Things Are Big” because even though it was just a simple decision, to help this woman or to not help her, there was a depth to the decision making and it still affected Jesus years later.

As humans we tend to care a lot about how others perceive us. This can lead to people making rash decisions and not following through with things because they get scared it might damage their reputation. In the story, Jesús Colón was contemplating whether or not he should help the struggling woman in the subway. In the end he decides against it, worried that his standing in society as a black and Puerto Rican man in that time would cause a problem. His fear of what the woman might think of him stopped him from offering is assistance. And even though that woman might not have had a problem with him at all, the idea that she could of was enough to make him not want to take the risk.
