Separation of Powers is an idea developed by Enlightenment thinker, Baron de Montesquieu. The idea suggests that the national government should be divided into different sections that have power over a certain thing. By doing so, this helps prevent the government from being too strong. Also, if one branch starts to become too powerful, the other branches can check and balance the power between the branches. In America, the three branches are the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branch.

The New Jersey Plan which stated that all of the states have the same amount of representation without regard to the population. The Virginia Plan stated that representation would be based on the population of a state. The Great Compromise was the solution to this, as it split Congress in two parts. The House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives considered the population in its representation and the Senate is limited to 2 people per state without regard to the population.
