Getting familiar with the standards - and having evidence and examples of how you meet them - is great preparation for writing quality employment applications and successfully marketing yourself at interviews.

Hidden job market
A high percentage of jobs are filled in the unadvertised job market - so be proactive and make contact with employers of interest.  

An employer may not have a current vacancy, but they may know someone who has. If you impress them with your approach, you may find an opportunity for casual work, a short-term contract  or another foot-in-the-door opportunity. 

You'll need a targeted, persuasive cover letter and excellent resume. Show that you have done your research on each employer that you contact. Clearly communicate why you want to work for them and the skills, qualities and experiences that you are offering.

A cover letter should accompany each application (unless the employer requests something different) and should be a targeted, precise, interesting communication that provides an opportunity for you to highlight skills and experience, and demonstrate your suitability for the position.

The aim of a cover letter is to match what you're offering with what the employer is looking for, to encourage the employer to look closely at your accompanying resume and other paperwork, and to hopefully invite you to an interview. 

Check out the sample letter here - but make sure you use your own words in your cover letters!

·       researching the organisation –  check the organisation’s website and brochures 

·       finding out as much as you can about who will be interviewing you, the format of the interview, directions for how to get there, and so on

·       ensuring you have appropriate clothing clean, well-maintained and ready at all times for interviews that may be called at short notice 

·       having a professional portfolio ready containing documentation relevant to the position you are being interviewed for

·       re-reading your application to refresh your memory of what you have already told the employer about yourself 

·       anticipating questions you may be asked and preparing answers for these – check out www.careers.qut.edu.au and look under Interviews and Beyond for a list of common general interview questions. 

·        practising your responses to key questions. You don’t want to hear what you say about yourself for the very first time at an interview! Practise in front of the mirror, with your friends, your mentor, your mum or your cat. However, you also need to keep in mind that it’s important not to over-rehearse your responses – you don’t want to sound as if you are memorising a script.

Video yourself! Check that your voice is clear and well-paced; your responses are structured and logical; you don't have any distracting mannerisms; and that you smile and make eye contact.
