Formal Conventions of a Title Sequence

Often, the first thing you will see in an opening title sequence is an indent for the production company of the film (e.g. Paramount). This serves the original purpose of crediting the owners but in a much more visual way than in previous films. The sequence will then continue to show the actors', directors' and producers' names. This is often integrated into the graphics of the opening sequence to make it more interesting to look at - however they are sometimes a lot simpler in order to draw attention to a specific element of the film. During this section of the title sequence, the film title is often revealed which is a vital convention of title sequences.

Throughout the title sequence, the setting is often introduced by the camera following a specific object or just the credits through the location, giving the audience a sort of 'guided tour'. This makes it clear to the audience where and when the film is set and allows the director to control what the audience sees/knows and what is left in the dark to create an enigma. However, some settings are not so easy for the audience to determine - particularly if it is a fictional location - in which case subtitles will be added to give them this information (e.g. 'London, 1939').

Whilst the visuals are on screen, there will be some sort of non-diegetic sound (often music) playing in the background. This also contributes to the setting of tone and atmosphere as well as, possibly, creating a synergy with an artist. For instance, in Skyfall a synergy is used between Adele and the James Bond Enterprise in order to promote each other.

Conventions are extremely important when producing a media product as it sets up the expectations for an audience and gives a clear structure to the media product you are selling. Without this, your audience my feeling disconnected from what you are trying to sell and not recognise as you want it to be.

However a director or producer may want to develop or challenge these media conventions so it fits and 'makes more sense' with the product they are selling. The may also want to convey a particular message and by breaking these conventions, they are able to convey their wish for change without even using the content of their media product yet.

The original purpose of a title sequence was to show the owners and people involved in the making of the film. However, as films have evolved, so have their title sequences. They are now a lot more advanced and are being used to entice the audiences through giving clues about themes explored in the film as well as creating enigmas. They also set the tone and atmosphere of the film through the use of graphics and music which also contribute to the audiences being able to work out the genre of the film. The final purpose of a title sequence is to introduce characters - whether these are a protagonists or not or even if there is only one character introduced, this all still contributes to the set up of the film.

Formatting of Title Credits

In the 'Gone Girl' title sequence, a very simple font is used. It is white, in capital letters and very easy to read. The formatting of the title credits is extremely important for three reasons:

1) the audience needs to be able to read what they say
2) they must fit in with the genre of the film, the storyline and of course, the framing of each shot
3) they mustn't distract the audience from what is going on in shot

'Gone Girl' also uses kerning on the text. This spaces out each letter which looks nicer and is a lot easier to read. This is one technique we noticed and used when making our own titles.

Type of Title Sequence

Like 'Gone Girl' we placed our title over moving image - making ours a narrative title sequence as it almost becomes an extra scene in the film; used to establish characters, settings and some of the potential dilemmas that may arise during the rest of the film.

The purpose of our title sequence is to set up the mystery that will be unraveled throughout the course of the film. For instance, when we show the anonymous letter being signed and sealed, the title credits appear on-screen and then the title sequence ends with the letter being left behind at the market where our protagonists are. This creates enigmas for the audience such as; will the girls find this letter? Who wrote the letter? Why? What does it say? Why was it left in the market?

Genre Conventions

All genres have specific elements the audience would expect to see in a film of that genre. These are known as genre conventions. For instance, the conventions of a horror film might include either a dark, isolated setting like a forest or abandoned building OR an urban, city environment to make the story seem more realistic by suspending disbelief and balancing out anything in the film that may be less believable (very likely in a horror)

GENRE CONVENTIONS IN THRILLER
- Suspense
- Plot-twists
- Low-key lighting
- Jump scares
- Shady/disturbed character
- Enigmas to keep the audience 'in the dark'
Examples of films from this genre: Inception, Gone Girl, Se7en, Taken, The Dark Knight

On the whole, I think we used most conventions of a title sequence. Elements such as the order and the look of the titles are very much conventional as well as the storyline - or as much of it as you can get from a title sequence - follow both media and genre conventions.

I think our final product is very successful as a recognisable title sequence within the genre of horror/thriller as we have kept to all the codes and conventions you would expect to have in something of this product and genre even if we may have deviated and developed some of these in order to tailor certain elements more to our specific production ideas and values.
