I have several experiences in modifying existing digital resources while respecting copyright and licensing attributes. One specific instance that comes to mind is when I was working as an educator and needed to adapt a digital educational resource for an educational event.

Specifically, it was a video intended for presentation at an online event. Although the original video was very good and rich in educational content, it needed adjustments to meet the needs and content of the particular event.

I faced various challenges during the modification process. One of them was finding material that was either free from copyright or had suitable usage licenses. I decided to use material that either had Creative Commons licenses or was in the public domain.

Another factor I had to consider was the efficiency of the modifications. I had to ensure that the modifications I made maintained the educational value of the material and that they would be readable and understandable to the participants of the event.

The result of the modifications was successful. The adapted digital material contributed to the smooth conduct of the event and helped participants better understand the topics presented. At the same time, I ensured that all the modifications I made were in accordance with copyright laws and usage licenses to avoid legal issues.

Generally speaking, it's not always simple when you want to use a resource and modify it. Sometimes, it's better to build something from scratch! Most of the problems, I face, have to do with the size of the photos – which need modification – or with the sound, which we have to be careful about what we include, so that we do not have a problem with copyright. As far as sound (which I may use in presentations) or images is concerned, I always refer to platforms that provide them for free and, when necessary, I mention the creator.Modifying educational content always has to do with reinforcing learning and creating appropriate and engaging content.

I often come across the need to modify existing digital materials and I'm often confused about copyright compliance. I usually try and answer those questions to myself.

When searching for teaching materials, I use the Croatian national database "Edutorij", which uses Common Creative Licenses.

I often need to shorten videos for teaching purposes. I do this in case they are too long for the lesson. This way I easily meet the teaching goals and outcomes. In the process, I care about the usage of the original video and fair attribution of the videos author.

As a speech therapist working with special needs students, I frequently modify existing digital resources to better suit the unique needs of my students while ensuring compliance with copyright and licensing attributes. One specific instance where I engaged in the modification process involved adapting a set of flashcards for articulation therapy.

The original flashcards contained images of common objects paired with words targeting specific speech sounds. While the content was relevant, the images were generic and did not always resonate with my students, who often responded better to visuals that were more personalized and meaningful to them. Additionally, I needed to ensure that the images used were copyright-free or properly licensed for educational use.

To address these challenges, I followed these steps:

Evaluation of Existing Resources: I carefully reviewed the existing flashcards to determine their suitability for my students' needs and identified areas for improvement.

Selection of Copyright-Compliant Images: I searched for copyright-free or licensed images that were relevant to the targeted speech sounds and aligned with my students' interests and experiences. I used reputable sources such as Creative Commons, Pixabay, and Unsplash to find high-quality images that could be used legally for educational purposes.

Modification of Content: I replaced the generic images in the original flashcards with the newly selected images, ensuring that each image accurately represented the target word and speech sound. I also made adjustments to the text to ensure clarity and consistency.

Review for Compliance: Before finalizing the modified flashcards, I double-checked the copyright and licensing attributes of the images to ensure full compliance with usage terms and conditions. I made sure to provide proper attribution for any images that required it and verified that all images were suitable for educational use.

Implementation and Evaluation: I incorporated the modified flashcards into my therapy sessions and observed the impact on student engagement and progress. The personalized and meaningful visuals helped to increase student motivation and participation in articulation practice, leading to improved speech sound production over time.

Through this experience, I gained several insights that could benefit others in creating educational content:

Personalization Enhances Engagement: Customizing digital resources to align with students' interests and experiences can significantly enhance engagement and motivation.

Attention to Copyright and Licensing is Essential: It is crucial to carefully evaluate the copyright and licensing attributes of digital content to ensure legal and ethical use. Using reputable sources and providing proper attribution are essential practices.

Continuous Evaluation and Improvement: Regularly reviewing and updating digital resources based on feedback and student needs is essential for maintaining their relevance and effectiveness in supporting learning objectives.

For one of the modules, the students have to learn to fill in forms. Up until last year, this was done on paper. I opted to use Microsoft Forms, the reason being that nowadays most forms are digital.

This ended up being a success, there were some difficulties surrounding the logistics. But overall it was a success and the students enjoyed the experience. Furthermore grading the assignment was a breeze.

Reflecting on my experiences with modifying digital resources while honoring copyright and licensing attributes, I encountered several hurdles and made crucial decisions to ensure compliance and preserve educational integrity. One specific scenario involved adapting an online article on climate change for my environmental science class. The main challenge was determining the extent of permissible modification under the article's Creative Commons license, which allowed adaptations but mandated proper attribution and non-commercial use. To adhere to these terms, I meticulously reviewed the license conditions and included appropriate attribution in my modified version. Moreover, I grappled with maintaining the original author's intentions while tailoring the content to suit my students' learning objectives and preferences. Throughout this process, I gained insights into the importance of comprehensively understanding and adhering to copyright and licensing regulations. By diligently following these guidelines, I ensured that my modifications were both ethical and legal, preserving the trustworthiness and credibility of the educational materials. Sharing these insights can empower others to navigate the modification process responsibly, maximizing the educational value of their resources while upholding copyright and licensing standards.

I found a worksheet licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) that covers basic fraction operations but lacks contextualized word problems that align with my curriculum standards.

Modification Process:

Understanding the License: Before proceeding with modifications, I carefully read the terms of the Creative Commons license associated with the worksheet. I ensured to understand the permissions and restrictions, particularly regarding attribution and sharing any derivative works under the same license.

Identifying Modifications: I planed to add contextualized word problems that relate fractions to real-life situations, such as baking recipes, shopping scenarios, or measurement tasks.

Creating Original Content: For the new word problems, I created original content that aligns with the mathematical concepts covered in the worksheet. I designed word problems that require students to apply fraction operations in practical contexts, such as dividing ingredients in a recipe or comparing prices of items at a store.

Using Public Domain Resources: In addition to creating original content, I searched for public domain resources, such as images or diagrams, to enhance the visual appeal of the modified worksheet. I included clear attributions to the creators of any external content used in the worksheet.

Testing and Reviewing: After making the modifications, I tested the worksheet to ensure that the new word problems are clear, relevant, and aligned with the curriculum standards. I also reviewed the worksheet for accuracy and coherence, ensuring that the modifications enhance the overall learning experience for my students.

Sharing and Licensing: Once satisfied with the modifications, I shared the modified worksheet with my colleagues and students.
